TWO CANON CITY IS COMPLI MENTED Mr. B. C. Wade, state secretary of the Young Men’s Christian Associa tion, is in town assisting in a short, quiet campaign for funds in suppoit of the local association for the cui • rent year. At a luncheon yesterday noon Mr. Wade made flattering refer ence to our city, its people, its clim ate, its churches, and its Young Men’s Christ!on Association. ‘A stranger quickly notices the wholesome, homey’ atmosphere of the place," ?ald he, "and I have not yet found a place that seems more desirable as a place of residence for my family than Canon City." Referring to the churches he said they would be a credit to cities many times our size, and to the local a3Bo elation he is of the opinion the good work now being done is much greater than is popularly understood. "You r Bible class enrollment of 69 boys and 30 men Is most creditable, being sur passed by only two other associations in the state, and the work you an doing through the "Boy Scouts,” the Sunday School Base Ball League and the entertainment course is of a high order. Considering yonr present In adequate facilities you are doing a splendid, efficient work.” The local directors have decided on a campaign for a new building next September and Mr. Wade believes there is no doubt as to the. successful Issue of that campaign. Trinidad Is to have a similar campaign this spring, as is also Cheyenne, Wyoming. Mr. Wade reports association work prosperous all over the state. On the Western Slope county work Is being developed. Delta county being already organized. Preliminary work Is un der way In Mts» and Garfield countlti and the city of Montrose Is likely to soon have a local association. Th? A. work for rural communities, an * commending it to the support of those able to assist in its promotion. The local canvass for funds, which commenced yesterday noon, is meet ing with a generally favorable re sponse and Is evidence that our peo ple arc not unappreciative of the good work being done. ARRESTED FOP SELLING LIQUOR IN DRY TERRITORY Battista Seavardi wait arrested by the authorities Wednesday afternoon on the charge of selling liquor in an ti-saloon territory and this morning at 10 o'clock was taken into county court where he entered a plea of not guilty" before Judge Cooper and was hold in the sum of three huudied dol lars for trial next Tuesday. Seavardi is the manager of Littell Brothers i store at the Wolf Park coal mine and his offense is alleged to have been committed there. Seavardi bears the reputation of being a iawabiding citi zen and this is the first complaint o! the kind lodged against him. RECEIVE WORD OF BROTHERS DEATH Mr. James Langan of 428 Sherman avenue, received word on Tuesday of the death of his brother Thomas, who succombed after a brief Illness, at Streator, Illinois. SAYS SKY LINE DRIVE IS FINE The views taken from the Skyline drive and the new highway are be lieved to be the finest series of pho tographs ever obtained in this portion of Colorado aud will be placed on saL*: to tbe operators of moving picture machines for exhibition to the public through the firm of Howe & Co., of New York and Philadelphia. More than seven hundred feet o film was used and many thousands of views were secured. An effort will bn made by Secretary Maddox of the Business Men’s Association to have them shown in this city within the next few months. Many pictures of Canon City, as well as points of scenic interest along tbe cr4st of the hogback and in the mountains between Three Mile spring and the rim of the Grand Canon of the Arkansas, were obtained and constitute an exceptionally attractive series of views. Borne negotiation was carried on several months ago look Ing to the photographing of scenes from the Skyline drive for biograph machines, but as the lowest estimate of the cost of such an undertaking was two hundred and fifty dollars the, proposition was abandoned. That thaj work should be secured for nothing is a matter for congratulation on the j part of the people of Canon City as it ■ cannot fail to be one of the most ef- j fectlve bits of advertising the com munity ever had. COMMISSIONERS HAVE RETURNED FROM DENVER County Commissioners W. H. Lx Grange. W. R. Allred and S. G. Kels j have returned from Denver, where they attended the first annual good roads conference; the meeting of the association of the county commission ers of the state and the stock show At the sessions of the association of i county commissioners, held on Mon-j day and Tuesday of this week. It was unanimously voted to recommend to the legislature the pass age of a bill increasing the salaries of commls- ‘ slonera in counties of the first, second ! and third classes to $3,000 a year, fourth class to $2,000 and the fifth ' class to'sl,ooo. The convention adopted a lesolutlc i j favoring most of the legislative pro- t gram of the good roads conference in Denver Inst week, and put itself on record as opposed to the bill creating a suite tax commission. A motion watl presented endorsing the plan to turn ! over the internal revenue fund to th * county commissioners as a part of general fund for road construction and improvement. Some of the com missioners fought it on tlm ground that it would deprive some of thj counties of special appropriations, but It was finally adopted by a vote of twenty-one to ten The legislative committee submitted a unanimous report against the proposition to turn over the internal Improvement fun 1 1 to the state highway commission.
