I haws had a good many friends salt me during the past year why I do not write more for The Record. I really enjoy the writing part of the newspaper but there are many details ahoat a dally newspaper anil one can hardly look after all de partments successfully. For five years much of my time has been taken up by tbe business side and I have left the writing, to others who have done it well. Years ago I wrote every line la the Weakly Rec ord, and occasionally when Mr. Em met-eon bo* been 111 or off on a va cation, which hasen't been often. I have taken his place for a day of two and enjoyed It keenly. The drudgery of writing comee when one feels that he is neglecting other things to do it and that has bean the trouble with aw work tor several yearn. But I am going to try to do more of it ln the fntnre. I shall try to famieb n column or two ones a week or afteaer. In starting out I am going to be a little confidential and talk to the readers of the Record Inst as person ally and frankly as If each waa a personal friend of mine and Interest ed. I know this is a Utile unueoal In n paper that Is published ter a little community. Mr. Bok of the L»- dies' Home Jon real or Mr. Lorimtr of tho Saturday Hvealng Post and Mr. O'Nail of tho Denver Times and F. W. W. of The Nears do those things freely because they seldom see the people tee* to face who read their editorials. Bat I are no reason by even In a little community on* may not lust as properly spesk as fraak ly to bit readers aa a pastor might to his congregation. So in tbe outset I will tell yow some real confidence*. For several years I have been halt trying to “drift" out of the news paper besteea*. Not that I do not Ilka the bostaess. ter I have learned that i Hke It hatter and know it bet ter than any other baths ess, bat from a money making standpoint it does not offer the remuneration to evea those who excell In It that many oth er lines or professions do—that the capital Invested end labor necessary really deserve. Whan I bought the lumber yard a few years ego I bed no Idea that 1 would be spending many hours a day In The Record office by this time—l thought that I would “drift" Into bigger business. I am entirely sat isfied with that investment bnt I have learned from It that my personal taste doesn't ran that war. It's too slow n business ter anybody who bt* ever been connected with a dally newspaper. Kvea Mr. Bmmereon who get* through his work about foar o'clock on most day* wouldn't feel like be wee earning hie money If he took Mr. Bandera place down at the yard. Yea haven't any Men what a quiet place evea a good lumber yard that la doing a good bnstnees la !f yow haven't sat around one for s tew days. So r hare drifted hack to the news paper offioe whore there la work to do—work of the Mad that I know haw to Ik. ■ •' '■» r c* < And I hare determined that I trill spend the next tew years la building •p The Record and helping It to help balM ap the town. I hare had temptations to more away. Ilka soar* of our good psopls, to a Mg city where the opportnnitss seem brighter aas bigger. A recant temptation cam* In the -way of a “call” to a large city newspaper tn Join some very daaSrabl* people ln its ownership and management. It whs Oust that brought tn* to * realisation of tbs fact that > don't want to move away from Canon City. And tho opportunity tn so sway to Mggar thing* has mad* m* mote contented to stay with s smaller pro position. Canon City possesses all the con veniences and advantages of city life, with all the comforts and pleasures or coantry life. Whore la there a better place to bring ap a family of children than here? If I were earning only two dollars a day I would rather lira in the sun shine of Colorado and among the fruit and blossoms of Canon City than In nay other place ln the world.
