DEC. 10, 1874. -' We Dotkre from an exchange that Gov. Garland, of Arkansas, is a native of Tipton county, this State His mother removed to Arkarimg while he was quite young. He is a nephew of the late Col. Chan. II. Hill, and Dr Lafayette Hill, Covington. Congress met last Monday and the President suhmitted his annual mes sage. He favors hard money, high tariff, V. V. Smith for Governor if Arkansas, etc. In Congress a till was introduced to issue greenbacks for national bank notes. Butler charges the present financial distress upon the Republican party, and made a ppeec-h to that effect. A bill was also intro duced to reduce the President's salary to twenty-fi ve thousand dollars, to take effect after the present term. A Vit ksburg jecial to the Mem phis Avalanche says a severe fight occurred there Monday between the whites and negroes. The affair com menced at 9 a.m. on Grove street, where two hundred negroes were en gaged by a squad of citizens and re pulsed, with six killed and several wounded and captured. Soon after a squadron were repulsed on Cherry street, with several killed and wound ed. About thirty negroes were killed and wounded and horses, mules and aims captured on the Jackson road. It w reported that negroes are burmt g houses in the country.
