Our informant is still of opinion that the rumor about the marriage of Gov. IiMeii to the Kentucky lady re siling in Alabama will he very likely to prove true. A rmolnn tor (irnat. ' Some of the administration pa per have taken the trouble to make elaborate denials of the story that there is a pro ject, on foot to pension Grant for life, with an annual salary ot 51U,U00 a year. The statement that such a plan is contemplated is true. Gen Banks, Geo. F. HoarandProf. Seelye are the members of the Houc w ho w ill make the speeches in favor of this pension. Gen. Banks, in an interview this morn ing, says that the idea of this pension came originally from a Democrat, though he declined to give his name. He said that it was now decided that matters will not be pressed until next winter. He thinks that the Demo crats of the House could not do a more popular thing than to agree to thispeiision. When Grantretires from office he w ill be the only ex-I'resident living, and on account of his great services will be entitled to special re gard. When this plan is broached next winter it will open the question of peisiomng aill re-wen tsrpon tneir retiring from office a subject not yet determined on bv Gen Banks, Ji:!ee I Hoar, or Prr.f. Seelyc. ofk tfew york letter. New York, Acq. 10, 1876. the political situation. Tlie splendid Democratic victory in Alabama, and the absence of all dis turbance at the polls has proved a stunning blow to the Republican man agers, lheir chiet argument nas been that Democratic victories in the South are attained only by violence and intimidation. They are forced to admit now that this great gain m Ala bama has occurred in one of the most peaceful elections ever known in any State, proving what has frequently been charged, that the disturbances in the South are investigated, when they do occur, by Republican emissa ries, for political purposes. The effect of steadyj determination in a good cause was never more plain ly perceptible than in the work whieh is now being carried on by the Dem ocratic party throughout this State. From every quarter are received assu rances of support in the labor of erad icating the public evils, and restoring the Government to its original and normal condition ot verity and spotless nesa. The letteis of our candidates have aided us greatly in our efforts. The ability and candor of these letters is everywhere acknowledged, even by our bitterest opponents, who seek" in vain for some weak point to criticise. The Republicans, intoad' of setting themselves to steady systematic work, are still , ventilating their private quarrels, "and wrangling over their State Ticket. Senator Conkling does not show any sign of abating his inter est in the'succese of Cornell, as a can didate for Governorship. There are indications, however, since Gov. Til den's firebrand fell into the camp, tKat' -the party leaders of the'fitate will not be permitted to reUia con trol of the matter. Affairs have as sumed such a serious aspect, .that .tbe .national committee nas signineu 114 intention of enforcing its '-authority over the Convention. It is" doubtful, however, whether this would heal the breach, tor Conkling. and. his. friends are under, the impression that they submitted tq quite sufficienli nsult.and injury at Cincinnati.' It is ' seareely possible that all the wiles of Chandler can induce a further- - masticatiyo i of his humble pie. - . The Democrats have so differently set about their work ' that they can calmly view their opponents' -Wrangling with a smile. The whole of their tabor is so-. classified and , arranged. that every portion is in . the hands of some one responsible for its'proper performance. The work of arran ging the State ticket, for -example, is the duty of the State Convention and to this body will it be left. . . The se lection of those who compose, it has been very carefully made, and it is universally felt that they may be trusted to faithfully; discharge their duty. They know the characteristics necessary in the men they select for the various offices, and particularly the high standard by which him whom they nominate for Governor must be measured. To them there fore, the adjudication will be left, and upon the election of the ticket which they construct will the whole power of united action be brought to bear. Governor Hendricks made 'a short stay here yesterday on his road from Albany to Indianapolis, lie was looking well, and expressed himself as much pleased with his visit fo Sar atoga. Mrs. Hendricks was with him, and they were accompanied by Win. II. Henderson of Indiana, and his wife. Both gentlemen expressed themselves with great confidence as to the political prospects iu their State. commoioi;e vaxdkrbilt. Itjseems to be now fully understood even by the sick man himself, that the life of our great Railroad Monarch is measured by a few days if not in deed hours. It would not be surpris ing if, before you receive thi;, he shall have passed away from the scene of his worldly struggles and triumphs. His family, his physicians, and his pastor are in constant attendance upou him, to soothe and comfort his declin ing hours. Much interest is manifes ted in his condition, not only out of regard to the man, but inconsequence of the supposed influence which his death may have upon the issue of the great railroad struggle now going or. There can be - little doubt however that the condition of this matter will remain unaltered, as the dying man's business affairs have . been carefully arranged, and his gigantic enterpises will be in the hands .of competent menjtrainedby him and instrict accord with him as to policy. . ! ; SEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
