He had certainly taken the wrung direction. More anon. ' .'-'M.- Keep This in Hind. - - It is estimated that there will b a reduction of at least 25 per cent, in the value of taxable property the present year. Thir reduction in val ue is equivalent to a redaction in the taxea. If the taxes are levied at the same rates, a reduction of 25 per cent, in value will be equivalent to a reduction -of 25 per cent' in taxes. The entire tax levied in 1676 for all purposes wax BU cents in Uioeon county. There was no additional school tax levied, and ' thix amount, with the exception of 10 cents oo the hundred dollars, was paid for tbe benefit of the State and County, and not for the schools. For the present year the State has reduced its tax for current expenses to IV cents, and tne 10 vents levied by the State for School purposes makes the entire State tax 29 cents. Tha county baa levied a Ux of 40 cents for current expenses and to pay off the indebtedness of the county. The entire tax levied so far, then, is 60 cenU oo the S100 for 1877. If the Jfeocl tax if roted by tbe people oo the 26th of May, as so doubt h will be, the entire Ux that lite county can levy will be 20 cents on the 1100, which will raise tbe rate of taxation to the 'same standard it was last year; but a reduction of val ue in the taxable property will be equivalent to a similar reduction in the taxes. Take for instance the taxable property of the eounty for 1876 as a basis, viz : 1878. Valaatioa of Lead $3 me, 256 " " Tewa lou 1 010 407 " Penoaaity S7 6 Mart X TalaaUoa for 1877.. tS 0S2 301 1 620 575 aetinated ... prop ...U 5S1 726 It is evident at 8 mills on the dollar for each year, the people will have to pay 25 per cent less taxes the present than they did last year. Ia 1S76 they were required to pay S4S &8 40 in is7 Ibey eaaaot be required to pay tkaa., 36 493 SO Total redaetioa of taaei. U77 li 164 40 There is a very material difference ia the two amounts. For the first year-only one-eighth of the amount was for the benefit of your schools; while in 1877, if you vote the tax, three-eighths of the tax will go to yocr schools, while at the same time you will be paying less taxes than in 1S76. , Amount of School Tax leried by tbe titate ia 1876 $6 082 30 School Tax for 1877 eaa't excetd 13 685 17 Benefit ir favor of your SchooU .. 17 602 87 In other words the man who paid 10 last year only contributed $1.25 to the schools. On the same property this vear he will pay $7.50 taxes, of which $280 wil go to the schools. It is plain, then, upon this basis of re duction in the value of taxable prop erty, the people will be relieved to the extent of $12,16160, and at the same time help the schools the above amount, 17,602.87. Now ia the time, if you want any schools, to secure them without im posing any additional burthens upon yourselves, since it is plain the addi tional School Tax you vote cannot be an additional tax as compared with last year's taxes, even at the same valuation of property. . CARROLL SEWS. In General. - McKenzie talks of abolishing her corporation, in order to get rid of the saloons. Mr John Anderson's residence, at McKenzie, burned a few nights since. Even: in old age things we loved in youth -possess attractions. Mr Dan Jennings had the misfors tune to have his pocket picked on Fri day night last of a fine gold watch and chain. He was sitting up at the Brown House to wait on a sick friend, and dropped off to sleep in the office. It is supposed the thief entered from the street. It is said the same gen tleman lost a considerable amount of money on the day of the show. Further proceedings of the Term of the Circuit Court : State vs J. P. Merritt, indictment for arson, tried by jury and acquitted. State vs Lewis Steele, indictment murder, tried by jury and acquitted. State vs George Prosser, indictment for larceny, continued.
