Jll Uolloway asked the Board to remit a portion of the tax assessed against him, as he did not have the amount of personal property assessed to him. He was relsed to amount of 1 1500 worth of property. The Mayor and Treasurer were re quested to make condensed state ment of the financial condition of the town by the next regular meeting. : S 11 Wheeler submitted a proposi tion to the Board, in which he pro posed to do all the public work needed and necessary on the streets; sidewalks, etc., of the town. On motion, the Street Committee, with the Mayor added, were instructed to confer with Mr. Wheeler in regard to said proposition , and if they deemed it advisable and proper, con ti act with aud put htm to work forthwith. . F. Rakjox, Mayor. Sf- "- ii'naaeHeaai.H ' On last Monday night a strangling tramp, by the name of Robert Dunn, wascaught in the act of picking the pocket of Mr D. B. Bryant, of this place? He secured nineteen 'dollars, when Mr. Bryant, who' was' watching him, arrested and turned him over to the police. On Tuesdaj morning he was tried by the Mayor and fined fifty dollars and easts. He was afterwards arrested on a State warrant, and tried before EsqV Jordan, and in default of bond, sent to jail to await trial at the Law Court. On the same sight Wm. Clark was arrested, and on Tuesday fined ten dollars and 'east oa a charge of ob taining a living by nndne means. - , , i Fitrpatric waa arrested here last Sunday- by officer McKnight, charged with swindling and gambling in Humboldt. The case of the State vs Nolan Irby, charged with gaming, came up Tues day, and resulted in the honorable ac quital of Mr. Irby, the jury rendering a verdietwithout leaving their seats. Two little negroes were severely scalded at the residance of Dr. A. W. Hawkini, Thursday evening by a kettle of boiling water turning over on them. They have since died from the eflects of the burn. We think our part of Carroll is in a good religious condition, and in point of morality we will be excelled by none.. . There is no necessity for our " Church Sessions" to condemn dancing etc., as immoral and unbecoming church members, for we people to appreciate good morals andchiis:ian obligations, and to con demn that which is calculated to de crease morality, dethrone virtue, con demn Christ, and is" diametrically opposed to the teachings of the Bible.
