convention would do well to throw
out both New York delegations, and
have nothing to do with that etate
until they can settle their own family
troubles.
The two Democratic conventions of
Ntw York have met, transacted bus
iness and adjourned. The leaders
composing them and the citizens they
represent are farther apart than ever.
Tilden did not send the p-omised let
ter; hs has not retired from ihe cau
vass, he is still a caudidadate for the
I'mideucy. He still prefers to feed
his insatiable ambitiou at the
expens of party unity and
suoceas. He is determined to have his
way, or prevent party triumph iu
the cation at large, as he did last year
in New York. This is to be deplored.
We had hoped that where so many
sensible and experienced men were
concerned a spirit of conciliation
would prevail, and that some accom
modation of the difficulties and differ
ncs between Tammany and Tilden
would have been reached. But they
have failed. The great stale of New
Yrk again sets the bad example of
division and enmity, aud will again,
as in 187G, go up to the convention
asking for seats lor two sets of dele
gates. But we hope that better couu
cils will prevail at Cincinnati, that
there at least will he ieace,
unity and concord; that Mr. Kelly
as well as Mr. Tildeu will be
wade U learn that the day for person
al rule in this country has passed and
their welfare alone are to be legislat
cd and provided for by the National
Democratic convention.

Mo., last Sunday evening. It is re
ported that near one hundred people
ltst their lives, among them all the
pnyeiciaus of the town, besides one r
two hundred wounded. Nearly every
house in the town was destroyed. Be
lief trains were sent in immediately
and all possible help rendered the suf
ferers. The &L Luis Republican's Marsh
field special says that seventy-one vic
tims of Sunday's storm have been bur
ied, and fsomo twenty-five or more
arc in a dying condition. The num
ber seriounly hurt is about one hun
dred and fifty. A babe about eighteen
months old, whose mother was killed
and friends all wounded, was found
yesterday in a ravine north of town,
where it lay all night. It is now do
ing well. Another child, two years
old, was found yesterday evening at
seven o'clock in the top of a tree,
where it had been for nearly twenty
four hour?. It Wits considerably bruis
ed but will recover. It was claimed
to-day by the parents, who lived two
miles and a half or three miles from
town. Its aerial flight hence must
have eutended over three miles. A
wa'oa has been fouud that was carried
over four milec, and a section of the
smoke stack of the mili over three ami
a half miles. It is reported that from
thirty to forty persons have been kil
led by the spurts of the tornado in tht
country, aud that the town of torsi
cana, in Barry county, is as badly
wrecked as this.
Hon. W. M. .Smith, census super
visor for this district, has written a
letter to the Memphis Appeal, from
which we copy the following extract;
The fifth supervisor's dishiet has
been divided into ITS enumeration
district", numliered from 1 to 178.
The civil district of the counties have
generally la-en adopted as enumera
tion districts. In some instances two
or more adjoining civil districts are
united iuto one enumeration district.
The numbers begin with the counties
iu alphabetical order, enumeration
district No. 1, being civil distrists one
and two of Crockett County, and end
with Weakley county. Crockett
county has ten enumeration districts,
Dyer has six, Fayette fifteen, Gibson
twenty one, Hardeman twelve, Hay
wood twelve, Lake one, Lauderdale
nine, Madison seventeen, Obbn elev
en, SShclby thirty-eight. Tipton
twelve, and 'Veakley fourteen.
Brownsville constitutes one enumera
tion district, Jackson two, and Mem
phis niocteeu. Iu Memphis the enu
meration is to bo completed in
two. weeks; iu the icmaiuder
of the district-, during the
month of June, the enumeration be
ginning all over the country ou the
first Monday in June.
