Dr. Samuel Hape, a prominent horti culturist of Goorgia, considers the afternoon sun as having a marked in jurious ell'ect up?in the southwest sido of the trunks of fruit trees. Tho peach, when trimmed high, suffers greatly from this cause, especially in the south ern climate. The bark dries up and unless timely protection is provided, the exposed trees slowly die lrom the e fleet of tho fiery rays of tho afternoon sun. The warming influence of the morning hours is sullicient to overcome tho cooling action of the night, and preserves the health of tho tree. The effect, of tlio afternoon sun is very marked in blighted pear trees, the southwest side being usually first af fected. Trees that are grown on hill sides sloping toward the east and south east are much loss subject to the mys terious and deadly blight. Currant, gooseberry and raspberry plants are in like manner affected by exposure to tha bright sun of the afternoon, exper iments in boxing trees, especially tho cherry, have been very successful. It is only necessary to protect tho south' west sido of the tree trunk. Dr. Hape suggests two boards nailed together lengthwise by their edges, and placed on the west sido, as being sullicient to protect the tree. here possible, trees may be shielded by being planted on hillsides sloping to tho southeast. Low limbs will furnish much shade to tho trunks, aud may be obtained by proper pruning. The small fruits currants, gooseberries, raspberries etc., can be easily protected from tho afternoon sun by being planted on tho east sida of a fence or other objects yielding shade. This matter of the sun-killing of fruit trees demands tho attention of all practical fruit-growers. American Agriculturist. m a Money That Costs Too JIucli. I havo seen f armors arrested and locked up as criminals for offering adulterated butter for sale; and, also, for selling impure milk. I havo scon scores of barrels of oleomargarine oil at prominent dairy stations on a rail road, addressed to fanners in tho vicinity whose businesss is that of mak ing butter. The reputation of Ameri can dairy goods has been practically ruined by tho prevalent adulteration with tallow and lard, and all because farmers ami dairymen "must havo more money." Then there is the tobacco business, which leads farmers to skin the greater part of their farm so that a few acres may be made to produce as much money as a hundred might. These farmers even buy their flour and meat and butter, and wore it not for tho better sense of their wives they would buy eggs and poultry, and even the fat tened turkey, over which they profess an annual thanksgiving which they do not feel. Thus they abandon the first duty of a farmer, and ruin their land and lay up wretchedness for their chil dren. At tho samo time they load themselves with anxiety and misery, watching for and hoping for high prices, which generally elude them in the end, because no men ever were more bound and enslaved by masters and ty rants than are tobacco-growers by the dealers who get rich by keeping the growers poor. The other day a number of married men were standing at the corner of Jef ferson and McLean streets talking about a case in the Tolice Court that day. A woman was fined for beating her husband, and the unanimous opin ion of the married men was that any man who would let a woman lick him was a fool, and ought to be ashamed to have her arrested for it No one was more outspoken in his opinion of the cowardice of such a man than Easygo, and just as he finished delivering him self of some very emphatic language, a red-headed woman stuck her head out of the door of a house and remarked: "Easygo, I need a hod of coal." "All right," he replied. "Yon see, gentlemen, my wife speaks kindly and politely to me, and as a consequence we live together in harmony so thick yon could cut it with a case-knife." "Henry Easygo, I want a hod of coal," again camo from the house as a ted head vanished from the open door. "Very well, wife. Now, gentlemen, I am proud to obey her meanest wish, because she is so" "7en-ne-ry! Are you going to bring me that coal?" 'Yes, in a minute. Now, if I were to stay hero much longer, she would go and get it herself, but I don't want her to do that, so I will go and get it for her. Yes, 'sirs; tho harmony of our household is as thick as cream, and I tell you, we never have any misunder standings or bickerings, but if we did, I would " "What!" demanded the red-headed woman, jumpingover the fence in front of the house. "What would you do, sir?" brandishing the potato-masher over his head. "I I I I'd bo very sorry," said Easygo, meekly. "So you would," his better half re plied. "Now, you skin out and get that coal, or you'll be the sorriest look ing mangled remains that ever was cast aside by a red-headed cyclone! Gents, we have more harnionv at our house tilian we know what to do with, and it's begun to sour," and she followed her husband into tho house, while one of the men remarked: ' "Oh, yes! it's thick as cream, and von might cut it with a case-knife, but it's sour as clabber."
