FISHES. The Degree of Temperature Endurable Bj Various Speclei. An experiment has lately been tried by the Secretary of the National Fish Culture Association at South Kensing ton, England, to test the highest tem perature endurable by the various spe cies of lish. To this end several speci mens of the following fish were select ed for the trial, namely, the carp, gud geon, dace, roach, perch, minnow, golden tench, common tench, trout aid salmon, all of which were deposit ed in cold water registering oil degs. The temperature was then gradually increased by the infusion of hot water through a tube which caused the temperature to rise steadily. None of the lish, however, exhibited signs of fading vitality until the thermom eter recorded 82 deg., when a perch be came prostrated; and shortly afterward its congeners followed its example in rapid succession in the followingorder: lloach, 82 1-2 deg. ; salmon, 83 deg. minnow, 85 deg. ; gudgeon, 85 1-2 deg. ; dace, 86 deg.; common tench, 88 (leg.; golden tench, 88 deg.; carp, 91 deg. In order to test the elhcacy of brandy as a lish-restorcr, each lish on showing signs of exhaustion was removed from the wator, dosed with a small quantity of braudy, and replaced in the tanks. The operation proved highly success ful; for on inspection the following day all the objects of the experiment were found swimming about as usual, thor oughly restored, with the exception oJ the uace, whicu died. The applications of electricity be come more varied every day. Tele barometers, telcthcrmometcrs, tele manometers, and telehydrobaromcters have recently been Invented which re spectively record, at distant points, air- pressure, heat, steam-pressure, and water-stages. A California electrician has also invented a process whereby gold, silver and copper can be instantly smelted by a lightning-stroke. Egyptian dress lasted for 2,000 years, and Greek dress near ly 1,000 years, and wherever dress lias been beautiful and rational it has lasted for a long time. The texture and color may have altered, but the dress has remained the same. As to style, he had seen a bonnet composed of nothing but a stuffed bird alight ing on a piece of tulle. That did not strike one as very sensible material of which to make a head-dress in u cliniata such as ours. On a Paris fashion-plate he had seen tinder a bon net of the 8tutl'ed-bird-and-tulle school a note to this effect: "With this kind of bonnet the mouth is worn slightly open." -Latnpblack is the principal adul terant for rubber of which overshoes are made.
