Mr. Joseph N. Alexander mws com

on the 9th inst.
Mr. Ed. Glass, a worthy and popu
lar young man, 23 years old, was
found dead in bed Saturday morning
in Trenton. Cause of death unknown.
Humboldt Messenger; Hon. W. I.
McFarland will run a red hot race for
congress. He is In fine trim, and
sanguine as to his nomination. Why
should he uot be? Who in thin dis
trict can beat him? When the pro
cession starts he will he in front and
wheu it ends he will be in the lead.
Trenton Recorder: The Revenue
Committee made a settlement last
week with Trustee Ramsey for 1884.
They fouud his books, accounts, etc.,
correct. Annual settlements have
beea made with the trustee for some
time, and thtre has never beeu a de
ficiency in his accounts to the value of
one cent.
Trenton Herald: While Duke
Mitchell was going home last Sunday
niirht his horse walked into an old
well about 25 feet deep which had
been covered over with brush. His
cries for help brought Jerry Mitchell,
a colored man, to the rescue, who,
with the assistance of a rope, sue
ceeded in landing him on terra firma
uuinjured. In trying to get his horse
out its neck was broken.
Trenton Recorder: We have been
t cha.ged with the crime of writing on-
ly the good things of Gibson county,
'but we endeavor to write what is
true. On the first Monday iu each
rm6nth there congregates here many
of the worst characters from this and
Surrounding counties, and almost uni
VerVaHy night closes in on a scene of
'drunkenness and debauchery. On last
"Mondfayix men went home with
their heads bo badly gashed and

recognize them. All of them were
youths, or at least, very young men,
but one. " Tnere is nothing very pars

. A; unique genius, that of Charles
Lamb. ' Just like nothing that ever
appeared before them, or has since
appeared, are the quaint and delight
ful 'fEssays of Elia,'' a new edition of
which has recently' been issued by
Aided, "The Literary Revolution''
publisher of New York. Turu to
any of your cyclopedias and they will
tell you that Charles Lanb was one of
the most charming essayists that the
English language has ever known,
and also that his "Essays of Elia" are
the choicest of his works. They an
not merely the first work of their class,
but, like-"Pilgrim's Progress' and
"Robinsoi Cruso.e," they constitute a
class by themselves. ,. The -volume is
certainly one of the most delightful
of the books described in Mr. Alden's
148-pag illustrated catalogue, which
he offers to send f r four cents, or the
16 page catalogue, which is sent free.
