conversation with Governor Cox, of Ohio,
he said his whole heart was with the body of
true men who carried tho country through
the war, and he earnestly desired to maintain
a cordial and perfect understanding with
them.
After malting the most strenuous efforts to
win over the Republican President, the Dem
ocrat are at last coming to the conclusion
that their labors will prove unavailing, if a
raddrn change ol tone aflbrds any criterion
to judgo from. For example, Senator Sauls
bury said in the course of his lachrymose
speech before a gathering of the faithful at
Washington on Saturday, tnat he was tired
of supporting a man who would not help
himself, who Tel the Connecticut election tro
against him, when he could have prevented.

that "Mr. Johnson is not our President."

The A'eirs likewise changes its attltnde
toward the President this morning, and sat s:

Following the lead of these two journals,
we may now expect the rural Democratic
press will go still further and soundly berate
Mr. Johnson for not fulfilling their expecta
tions, and ranging himself along with them.
The President, however, wdl doubtless pay
little heed to, and care less about, these un
unfnendly expressions of opinion. Nor need
he look to mere party organizations for ap
proval and support. If, rising above all
parties and Influences, he fearlessly and con
scientiously performs his wholo duty, the
voice of the American people will applaud

Tills well-known caterer and o) sternum,
one of the Institutions" of New York for
nearly flftj years, died )cstcrda) In tldscity,
at the age, of seventy the jcars.
Mr.Downinff was born in Accomac countv.
Virginia, on the 27th of January, 1791. lie
was born a slate. His master's family were
well known and much respected in that
county. The white meeting house was
naraea after the famih, being known as the
"Downing Meeting House." The mother
of Downing was a woman well known and
much respected for her piety. Downing in
boyhood was sent to the sumo school with
Henry A. AVisc.
His parents were freed by old Captain
Downing. Subsequently a rilatito of Cap
tain Downing attempted to set aside his will
and re-enslave the people he had freed. This
person was killed by the colored people, who
resisted his attempt. They were thereafter
left in peace.
During the war of 1812, Thomas Downing
first came North, and for a time nas with the
army. After the war lie went to Pluladel-
Shia, where, having no trade, he was a servant
l some of the nromlnent futilities of the eitv.

He came to New York in June, 1819, and
began life as a laltomtner, opening a shop
in Broad street ; and here he soon after sit
up an eating house, which shortly became
famous with down-town merchants, for the
excellence of his oysters and other eatables,
and the cleanliness of hU) place.
One of the great events of Mr. Downing's
life occurred at tho great fire in 1835, when
a large part of the business part of the city
was destrojed Mr Downing, by his pres
ence of mind, succeeded in suving property
valued at our u million of dollars. The
weather was so cold that the water froze
nearly as fast us it left the engines, and but
little could be dono to stay the rapid progress'
of the flames. Mr. Downing discovered sev
eral barrels of vinegar standing behind a
fence in the direct course the lire wus taking
from Kxchunge place to Wall street. These
barrels ho opened, and stundmg behind the
fence threw the lnegar upon the flumes at
freat personal risk until ho had cheeked the
ro in that direction. He was injured b)
the fire. In a lithograph of tho conflagra
tion, which wus subsequently issued, he was
given the most prominent place. His ser
vices were also recognized b u series of res
olutions which were adopted by a meeting
of prominent citizens.

oysters. His name thus became u warrant
for good living, and he was for many years
the chief caterer for parties, especially
amongst the old residents
Mr. Downing raised u lurgc family of child
ren, to whom he gae a liberal education,
aenduig some of them to l'.urope for that
purpose. Only two of his children Oeorge
T., the eldest, and Peter W,tho )oungebt
survive their father.
Mr. Downing was connected with the
higher degrees of Masonry, was an Odd Tel
low, and for a great many years had been a
vestryman of St. Philip's Protestunt Episco
pal Church. His attachment to the old spot
in Broad street, where his eating house so
long stood, was very strong, and when the
property changed hands, a ) car or two ago,
and he was obliged to remove, it caused him
much suffering.

It is evident from tho above that the sud
den change at Washington in faor of the
admission of the Tennessee delegation has
been brought about by u desire on the part
of the ultras to secure the approval of the
Freedmen's llurcau bill, "sign the bill.
Mr. President, and we will admit the ICeprc
scntatlres and Senators from your State," is
the game. Well, the President is not a
trader. If Tennessee is to be proscribed
until ho makes some such bargain as this,
she is likely to be proscribed for somu ) ears
to come.
The statement that the obstacles in the
way of Tennessee have "accumulated in con
sequence, of the open and repeated disaffec
tion of tho recent insurgents, who seemed to
delight especially in Tennessee in showing
their disregard of their oaths and their con
tempt for the national authority," is un
