THE HATIONAIi REPUBLICAN. , (MONDAY , MORNING. fNOVJEMBER 5. .18(36. i y Jflalional Qtytibliau. MOXDAT MORNING NOVEMBER 5, 1868. Cnrlonn Occupation In Pari. A list was lately published, compiled from statistics of Farli trade, of a number of enrioua occupations and manufactures, sup posed to be peculiar to Paris, although probably many of them are to be found in London There are, however, a certain number of what aro emphatically called "Farls articles," of which that ingenious and industrious city has the monopoly. Among these are tho following: Twelre manufactu rers of artificial eyes and eight of pastry cooks' jackets, two makers of skates and forty corncuttcrs, eighteen wholesale mus tard merchants, botch constructors of light ning conductors, seven of speaking trumpets, and three bechiro makers, eight manufactu rers of wooden heads for barbers and bonnet makers, and three of corkscrews, sixteen dealers in vanilla and thirteen in leeches, fort) nine cutters of hares' hair for the hatters and thirteen manufacturers of hel mets and hatchets for sappers, nineteen horsedealers and fifteen makers of reeds for clarionets, bassoons and hautbois, thirteen muzzle makers and four crutch makers, eighteen gut workers and nine manufacturers of foot-warmers, and one- breaker-up of carriages None of these occupations, how ever, can compete, for singularity, with that of a young fellow who was lately taken be fore a Paris magistrate as a vagabond: "You havo no occupation? ' sold the bench in quiringly. "Beg your worship's pardon," was the rejoinder: "I deal in bits of halter for the uc of gentlemen as plajs" There is a superstition that a bit of rope with which a man ha lcn hanged, carried in the pocket, secures luck at cards Good and Bad A curious application of electricity has been made in Paris, at tho Porto St. Martin Theatre, In the celebrated spectacle "Les Parisiens a Londres" In one fir the scenes a number of girls appear wearing light crowns, consisting of a fillet of metal which at certain moments is placed in communication with a galvanic battery. By means of wires invisible to the audience, a series of breaks arc arranged in the course of tho current, so that when contact Is made with the battery a number of luminous points appear in the crown, giwng it the appear ance of being studded with stars Accord ing to the Droit, however, an accident took place one evening during the representation of this scene, in consequence of the disar rangement of the wires, by which one of the unfortunate dancers received the current through her head, the shock bemg sufficiently violent to throw her to the ground A Good Hfcord 0. 0. Fulton is editor of the Baltimore American. Before he as editor of that paper he had succeeded in es tablishing a reputation, as is shown from this extract from the Baltimore Sun of Sept 15, "At tho September term the Judge of the Cnm nal Court directed the name of Charles C Fulton to be stricken from the Grand Jurj, as a liar, and a man umsorth) to serve on a grand jurj."
