"THE RODttAN OUNH."
PBlLlfilLPBlA. J.BB.rr. 1PA7.
tUlter iVafioiuf UipuUttan.
I notice the criticisms of yonr correspon
dentone of tbat numerous family, the
Bmltns on my'commnnlcatlon or the 17th
nlL, entitled "lleary OrJnanco Again." I
soppoie jonr correspondent, and my critic,
to be one of the "Bread-and-butter brigade"
an emrjlcvee of the ordnance denartment
anxloai to pnt hlmscir "to" the front') in the
uuiy luauuer pguiuie in laesa piping time,
of peace." 1 will therefore gratify him by
jeplltar 1o biseritldsrai,
'Jvhn begins by
ssertintr that mv letter
id on the
Duriung oi Heavy ordnance,
Ue lajal mato " some Tery liogular state-
mtrtU," and charges that I Ulfcn the con
straction of the Itodman gnn to tho manner
in which tallow candle is made,
1 From the constractlon Vf thts'part of lis
letter to yon he (Jehn) seems to desiro yciur
reader to believe either tbat J do not biow
how a R6dmart'gdn If made, or else, while'
Knowing, i songnt to conrey a wrong im
pression to the jpobllfl, lly object and my
endeavor in wfitinir thn communication crit
icised by "One ortho.SmithFttnily." was to
edaeate that portion of the public wh do not
usually study lucb matters in tho most com
mon phenomena of natural philosophy that
apply to the snbjcct, and at the lamo tune to
suggest how we can make large guns relia
ble; and everybody wbo jpays laies or who
is a patriotic citizen of our country, has an
Interest in this last qucsliorw
I will repeat my description of the manner
in which a Rodman gun is made, and then
the explanation of my critic, in relation to
tne same subject, mat your readers may
judge which is the moro concise and Instruct
ive regarding this intricate subject. I wrote:
"lieing cast hollow and cooled from the
interior, the fluid metal chills in successive
layers about the bore, each stratum forming
upon what it enclosed, as the tallow forms
upon the wick of a dipped candle, and exerting
a compressing force similar to tbat exerted bv
the tire of a wagon wheel put on hot." Sly
menu layo;
"The Hodman can is cast hollow. While in
the molten state, the bore is chilled with n
running stream of cold water. Tho chilling
nroccss is vcrv irradual. but continuous:
the casting, therefore, becomes homoge
neous. The only chanco of layers forming
in the process is on the surface, internal and
external, which is ncculiar to all castincs.
ant. are to thin that the necessary process of
finithing remotes them I It may te that the
interior oi ino gun is more acme man tne
exterior, by reason or tbe contract ton of the
outward man. llut tho word layer has no
relation to it, I wonld rather liken it to a
hill ol homogeneous sand Tho gentleman
may have his choice, tbo bottom being
more compressed than the top, but the
weight is so gradual that at no part Is there
a layer.
"Indeed were tho itodman gun in layers,
it might lie an advantage, for a crack at tbe
vent wouia do connncd to tne urst layer.
Tho crack would return to place itself.
"The Itodman gun when burst, exhibits no
layer."
So far there is not a great difference in Sir.
Smith's Idea and mine about the constrac
tlon of 'theTlodirfaa'gtfh, unless It bo'ln the
number of words wo use to describe our
iews. In fact, wo are both nearly right, ex
cept that John is entirely obscure in all that
he says about the vent. Tho gentleman
skips my very pertinent facts relating to tbe
force with which metals expand as they ure
heated, especially if subjected to a strain of
compression: in connection with which I as
sert and he quotes : "It can bo seen that if
the gnn has been constructed In such a man
ner as to best resist tho pressure or tbe pow.
der, it will be burst by the heat communi
cated." Upon which last he continues ; " If
this theory were true, every Rodman gun
would bcrst after a few rounds of continuous
firing, which is not tho case." !f Mr. Smith
had said continuous rapid tiring, he could
not havo said, at the close of his paragraph,
"which is not true." Tho wholo Question
turns upon the rapidity of tiring or sizo of
tne gun. i navo irequentiy asserted mat
slow Bring was uo test oftireguns, because
it was not "the test of battle."
I show conclusively that guns hare not
burst during thoso battles in which they
vero fired slowlr, and I havo frcnuentlv
drawn attention to the fact tbat in proving
guns of large calibre they were fired slowly,
and I made tho important assertion in my
letter that " three large Rodman guns (per
haps more) have burst spontaneously in the
foundry, witnout ueing nreu at an; and not
one of them ever has been, or ever can be,
fired twenty rounds in quick succession."
What I did this gentleman overlook such
important statements as these, and expend
so many words upon the hair-splitting dis
tinction to which he has drawn your atten
tion? lie continues injudiciously: "I know
a Rodman gun which has withstood 4,000
rounds, of course, it was not fired rapidly, or
it was of small calibre, and I hato seen a
Parrott 200, made on the Rodman j stem,
burst on tbo third round after proof. 1 have
seen a 200 pounder Rodman burst on the
SOth round, and I havo seen one burst on
the 1,500th round."
lie informs us that a (smaif) Rodman gun,
calibre 3.80 Inches, endured "1,900 rounds,
and is still whole; and that it got so hot that
It was deemed unsafe to fire it." '
If a 15-inch Rodman gun were heated in
side aa hot as the gun to which he alludes,
by inserting heated shot In tba boro, it would
have burst without any powder.
I have frequently asserted that small guns
do not burst because they are heated entirely
through tho thickness of the wall, for the same
reason that a thin glass tumbler Is not broken
by pouring hot water Into it, while a thick
one would be broken Instantly
lie afterwards adds what seems hut only
contradiction to any of my statements, vis:
"I have seen a Uoaman pun fired over 100
rounds In quick succession, and It did not
burst."
Why did ho not say a heavy gun, I. c., a
gun of largo calibre If It was a heavy one
because that is the only lund of gun I hate
referred to, as being affected injuriously by
unequal expansion.
"My assertion, mat nutnocrs oi large itou
man cuns have been made, and are being
made and mounted they ure on "tircss
parade" principally on forts that ltaro never
been attacked; consequently, that class have
never been subjected to me real test oi un

I reassert that every uord ot this statement
i true, and it is founded on facts that are
well known; and my assertion will probably
bo believed in preference to his, at least until
he givos tho public his real name, and per
haps then.
I now wish to make another assertion even

States, by simply heating them from the
bore by Inserting a hot start of iron, smaller
than the bore, into them. I thallenra the
advdeatea of the Rodman system to procure
authority for me to conduct the experiment
at my own expense, the Government furnish
ing the guns for that purpose from those on
'aress paraue.
I can see 'no reason why this trentleman
should wish me to have more faith in the
genins of my countrymen. I have, and I be
lieve, with cause, unlimited faith in the
genius or tnoso wbo have so long kept tbe
country In the belief that the so-called Rod
man gun woud ever answer for practical
service. I do riot expect much from the

Thero is a well-known Greek story of a
penniless man wbo, coins' out with a rope in

money, wrucu Induced mm to urow tne rope
away: whereas the owner of the nurse, com-

only the rope instead, straightway hanged
himself. A still more curious tale of a simi
lar kind is told by the China papers. In tbe
native city of Shanghai the parents of a
young lady lately married, having fallen
into distressed circumstances, applied to her
for assistance, and her husband allowed her
to giro them a coat for tbe purpose of being
pawned. Tbo daughter, however, being
anxious to render further aid without her
husband's knowledge, secreted sixteen dol
lars in tho pocket of the coat. The old man
did not discover this, and took it to a pawn
broker, who. noticing the money on unfold

advanced two dollars. Boon alter too nits

This story is very characteristic of the Chi
nese feelings in regard to life, and similar
incidents notunircquentiy occur.
Some years airo. for instance, an accom
plished young lady at Canton, who had been
unfortunately married to a coarse and stupid
husband, v,as bewailing her fate to a party of
sisters and female cousins, and declared her
intention of committing suicide. On this
the other young ladies declared that, sinco

and so tho wholo bevy of them joined hands
together, and, walking into a fish-pond, de
liberately drowned themselves. Acaln. three

guarded by two iron bars, and the problem

the three of them were to bo hanged upon
tho two bars.
From tho positions In which they were
found in the moraine, it would seem that the
third man had assisted the two others In
hanging thcinselvcB from the bars by their
tails: that then he had cut down one of them
by guawing through the tail with his teeth,
and, using the dead body as a stool, to be
afterwards kicked over, ho had contrived to
suspend himself. All this, too, was done so
quietly as not to attract the notice of a sen
try who was pacing outside beneath the win
dow. Tut St, I.ouis iJeputJicon of Sunday says;
"On Saturday a gentleman of this city had
the misfortune to lose his wife by death.
He was so strongly attached to her that, in
spite of the moat urgent entreaties to the
contrary, he persistently refused to have her
mortal remains removed for Interment.
Yesterday a complaint was lodged at the
Coroner's offico by some of his neighbors,
nlio were notified by that functionary that he
had no power to act in the premises, and re
ferred them to the Board of Health."

IMPORTANT TO njRCIIASEIM
AND HOLDER OF GOVERN
KENT NECCRITIES.
fomciAL.J
Tho rapid conversion at the Treasury De
partment of 7.30 notca into 6 JO bond is at
tended with many difficulties on acconnt of
the numbers of lost or stolen 7.30 notes sent
to tbe Department. Banks and parties deal
ing in 7.30' should remember that, although
all the coupon bonds of tbe Government are
issued payable to bearer, so that they will
pus by delivery and are good, although lost ,
or stolen, when In the bands of a bona fide
holder, the case is different with tho 7 JO's,
which are issued in blank, but with the words
"or order," instead of "or bearer," imprinted
en the face. So long as a 7.30 nolo remain
thus in blank, it passes by delivery like a
coupon bond; and a bona fide purchaser for
value can collect the mo notwithstsndinr
it tuvt Been lost or stolen. Bat in cue tba
holder of the 7.30. fills tho brink space with
hi name, tho note then becomes his prop
erty, payable to him or order; and he cannot
thereafter be deprived of his title by any loss
or larceny of the note, any more than the
holder Of a check or draft payable to hi
order; and thia la the law, notwithstanding
his namo may have been so skilfully extract
ed by acid or otherwiso as to ieavo no trace
of tbe name. If the original holder of tho
note can prove clearly tbat his namo was
onco written upon the face of the 7.30, his
titlo is good, notwithstanding the erasure,
and even against a eona fide holder for value,
and will bo recognized by tho Treasury De
partment, and, open proof of the facts, will
bo paid to him.
All persons dealing In Government securi
ties ought carefully to bear in mind the fore
going peculiarity of 7.30 notes, which may, u
stated, become converted into negotiable se
curities payable only to order, which cannot
be the cue with any of the coupon bonds of
the Government.
What France Thinks or Fenlanlam.
From Uo Pari! Patrll, Dvombor 11.
For some days put the telegram from
Dublin have not varied : "Numerous arrest
havo been made." "The arrests continue."
And what is still more remarkable is that
these telegrams every day find a place in the
best French "liberal" Journals without ono
word of protest or regrei being uttered. If
they wcro dated from Madrid, what would not
the liberals say 1 If they came from Flor
ence or Venice, with what amenities would
they not inspire the clerical publications
against Italy I But that comes from Dublin,
from England, from the country of liberty,
u it is called, and it is hardly noticed 1
There is in that corner of tho world an en
tire people wbo does not know II it will have
a to-morrow ; thero are whole towns occupU 1
by the police ; there are village: which their
inhabitant are obliged to desert to make
room for the soldiers arriving from England,
and the French M)ibTals"' ohow -tbemielTM
perlectly calm, they who have, however, the
sentiment of the universal family so strongly
developed. The Cretans are to be pitied
because tho Turks demand from tbem re
spect for tho laws, but the Irish merit no
pity from the moment that it is England that
arrests and imprisons them, or places a price
on their heads. Ah 1 even if a 'I'urfc should
be ruh enough to offer a price for tbe bead
of an insurgent Candiote. Ahl if Marshal
Narvaei should distribute to all the Spanish
policemen the portrait of General Prim u
that of Stephens has been.
"To this it is said that England is defend
ing herself. In fact she is, but against the
evil which she haa hcrsell created and aggra
vated; she defends herself against a people
to whom Mr. Bright was not far the other
day from counselling a general distrust of
the authorities and landowners. She is right
to defend herself; but Turkoy is wrong, tbe
Spanish Government is wrong, the Italian
Government Is wrong. The French "Lib
erals" hare decided so, and telegrams from
Dublin will continue to say in tbe midst of
general silenco, "Numerous arrests aro
being made here."
