In Now York. Ho has leicril scars on
his hesd and body. souTcnlrs of disreputa
ble frays in wmen bo nas occn engaged.
On orrlvlng at a place called Manchats, or
some such name, we found this Captain
Smith mounted on ft high scat under a
nrtlro hut with tho front cnt oat, evident
ly designed for tha rmrpoBO to which it
was now .ddiicu. aeauoir uui inrco carm,
and offering to bet twenty dollars no one
could nolnt out a narticolar card. In a
moment I comprehended the whole thing,
detected bis accomplices who tetre permit
ted to Kin, to act oi uccoys to outers to do
neCCeu, onu item ruuuu uuuua uurtauji;
my fellow passengers to avoid tho snaro,
but I regret to say I learned afterwards,
that In tho time wo were there, ho had
managed to swindlo a large sum of money
from them. One who had nothing but a
blonso to wear all the journey acknowl
edged having lost twenty dollars in gold.
lie was a middle aged man, apparently a
keen, sharp rellow, a ucoteninan. l ncara
of another who lost ono hundred dollars,
all be had. It is said that in all he won
between eight hundred and a thousand
dollars irom mis Bingio trip.
It appeared as though the officers of tho
boat wcro his accomplices, for not only
were the men kept ashore until the but
arrived to take them oD, but when she did
arrive they were not permitted to go on
board for a long time, say near half an
hour; then, as if to mako tip for lost time,
tho passengers wcro hurried on board so
rapidly, that accidents occurred, and men
fell info the water while crossing tho nar
row, slippery planks placed for them to
cross upon.
Again It Bccmcu as mougu mc ouicers
wrrn in romnlicltv with the ramblers, for
most of tho women had been left on board
another boat. Consequently when wo ar
rived, as we subsequently did, at a later
period at Castillo, tho men, freed Irom the
restralnlnrr Influences of their wives and
families, fell an easy prey to the human
cormorants ready to devour them.
Wo arrived at Castillo at about four
o'clock p. ra., and walked around tho
rapids at this placo to another ves.
Bel that was In waiting to carry us up to
tho "lake boat." Here was a track laid
for the purpose of transporting tho bag
bntrc. Tihlch was drawn in a touch car,
drawn by littlo mules, who made some ten
or twelve trios each to complete the task.
Hero we found a curious old fort I'ort
Ban Carlos tho battlements all overgrown
with moss ana verdure, tviuie mo por
tals of tbo rlckotly old drawn bridffo ttcro
defended by some half dozen swarthy
negroes, who seemed to appreciate tueir
Ixnportanco lu being abla to forbid visitors
entering the fort. Tho notorious Captain
Walker, it Is said, made an attempt to
capture this place, it is naruiy possioie
to credit that tho place could havo bus
tnln.fi an fittapk from nnvthini annroach-
inc a well organized force. I could not
help, while here, viewing the unparalleled
fertility and beauty or tho surrounding
country, and knowing how soon tho genius
of Americans would dcvclope this conn
try, and mako its "waste places blossom
like tho rose," and seeing how necessary
this country is to America, wishing that
bis ill planed and worse executed schemo
had proved successful, and that it was to
day under -the protection of tho glorious
" stars and stripes."
So fully convinced wcro the second
cabin passengers as to tho complicity of
the officers ot the vessel with theso gam
blers that it required but little persuasion
on my part to organize a vigilance com
mittee to patrol tho vessel all night, I
taking my watch between 2 and G o'clock,
a. in., in company with two or threo other
guards'.
I felt an agrccablo excitement in this
littlo affair, and am free to odrait that had
occasion really demanded, the revolver with
whlchl was armed ouldsoonhaoinade Its
own repot of tho proceedings. It Is said
Napoleon onco remarked It was difficult to
find a man with two-o'clock courage; that
there was aomethlnc in the hour antago
nistic to warllko operations; but for myself
a rawer preicr tno nour; tuero 10 outu u
witchery about it It seems to ncrvo a man,
as I think.
There was little troublo in waking a pas
senger, for nono of us eTcn tbo first cahin
ers had so much as a pillow, nothing but
a piece of cotton duck stretched across the
berth formed the bed. One of theso 3xC
compartments was allotted to myself and
family, six in all; it is needless to say,
therciorc, there was no opportunity for me
to go "to bed," and consequently I Bat
up all night, and caught such snatches
of alcep as a lot of noisy passengers, en
deavoring to beguile a tedious hour,
would permit. This was tho first night.
On tho second, at Castillo, wo wcro able to
Improvlso beds out of settees. Tho third
night, on board tho lake boat, tho first
cabin passengers only were indulgod with
Bleeping cabins, and kch at best wcro
but miserable apologtavror sleeping apart
menta. Tho second cabincrs were obliged
to sleep sitting up, and many of them in
parts of tho boat devoid of shelter, though
during the early part of tho night tho dews
fell heavily, and towards morning it rained
quite freely.
On tho evening of tho third day wo
reached tho lake, and as soon as tho bair-
gogo was transferred from tho river boat
wo steamed oil. This boat was a imio
steamer, canable. nerhans. of carrvimr one
hundred first and second cabin passengers
and aa manv more Btccrago passengers,
and yet I was assured by tho captain of
mo Moses Taylor that wuue in command
01 ncr no nail carried as many as nine nun
dred nassenirers on a slnelo trip.
About G o'clock on tho morning of tho
1 3th wo were somewhat alarmed by a cry
of " fire." A few pails full of water put it
out, uui not ucioro it nau cuurreu sorao
planks that wcro rlDDcd open by the em
ployees of tho boat. Had tho fire notbeen
Bubdued aa it waa thcro would havo been
but a vory poor chance of this narration
ever reaching you, for I did not see a boat
attached to the vessel, and we wero at least
twenty miles from land, and that land was
one of two immense volcanic islands that
apparently loomed up some six or seven
hundred feet abovo the level of the sea.
Then were Hunt, misty clouds on the
apex of these mountains that In the morn
ing sun appeared as though the volcanoes
wcro still in active operation. The op
pcaranco of these beautiful islands in the
centre of this lake waa very interesting.
At aDoui iu o clock- in mo morning wo
arrived at a whari and disembarked, the
arrangements for performing which feat
would bo considered disgraceful to Fcejce
Islanders to an American company it
was criminal. Still onr good fortune was
in tha ascendant, and wo all got through
without accident.
At tho end of this wharf wo found bo mo
two or threo hundred mules, ponies and
ambulances. Several of the mules bore
tho "0. S. A." brand. Tho purser of the
lako boat supplied us with tickets and
parts of tickets equalling whole, half and
quarter passages. The owner of a mule,
it appeared, was allowed threo dollars for
the uae of his animal In traverslnir tho
twelvo miles we had to travel. MjscU
and ramiiy secured Beats in an ambulance,
and after somo three or four hours reached
Ban Juan del Sur in safety, having as
cended a very high hill and descended it a
few minutes afterwards.
While traveling on this road I bought
a very pretty parroquct for twenty cents.
We saw several orange and lime trees,
apparently crowinc wild, bv the roadside.
We gathered a few, but they wcro poor
things, coarse, and not worthv to compare
with the poorest Havana oranges and
lemons. We purchased eleven oranges
for twentv-uvo cents at San Juan del Sur.
These were no better poor anoloeics fo;
oranges. I was greatly disappointed at
not seeing mo "orango groves' i nau
read of, but thero was nothing wortnr me
namo of a plantation on the route.
i came across one old American irom
Worcester, Mass , keeping tho "half-way
house," but ho was too busy for me to
learn anUhinir from or of him.
I also met an Knglishman superintend
ing tho grading of the hill, and should
havo been glad of an opportunity to con
verse wiui nun nau time permitted, uut
tho natlro drhcr was an unsociable fel
low, intent on getting to his destination.
We saw an Irishman stopping at the way
side huts and drinking several drinks, and
then riding off without paying for them,
saying "a man was n fool who paid for

gambler, Captain Smith, came along, and
on being appealed to by the natives, he
drovo the drunken rascal off, and made
him fall off his mule, threatening to horse
whip him, which the drunken brute quietly
submitted to. Captain Smith, by aits liko
these, has uecoine recognized as a patron
and protector: conscaucntlv they readily
render hiin all tho assistance in their power
to plunder travelers. In fact, they seemed
to enter Into the spirit with him with gusto,
a. ftiMivl, llmv n.ln.moil "tlin rrpAonlinrn."
epproprialo subjects therefor. As somo of
tuo passengers wcro passing a uut at vas
tillo somo gaudily dressed women were
lauguing togetner and complimenting the
passers by with tho following: "Here are
some more greenhorns."
The natives adopt a curious practice of
cutting off and pilfering every long strap
they find attached to trunks; their motive
for this ia said to be to supply themselves
with harness. The general agent of the
Transit Company was among tho passen
gers, and said his had been served In the
same manrcr, and treated tho complaints
of his fellow passengers with tho utmost
nonchalance. I saw a fine trunk that cost
$35 a few dajs before completely ruined
bv this strsp stcalintr nroccss. Tills Tran
sit Company needs a thorough reorganiza
tion. I never saw moro mlscrablo misman
agement In my life anywhere. When it is
remembered that they havo chargo of tho
lives and property of upwards of twenty
thousand pcoplo during a jcar, such a
"two cent" concern becomes a great power
for evil.
