Ills popular to accuse men in hlch places

YTe baTO carefully exsralnsd a copy of
LUtlefleld'e new proiralt of Lincoln, on
steel, by Guylor, and moil esy Ihal, tn our
Judgment, It 1 the only engraved portrait
that fully rtalltst the Iron Idea of Mr. Lin
coln. Mr. LUtleoeUa who wu Intimately ac
qnsloted wltb Mr Lincoln, botb In Spring'
field aod In Waablnjton, deTOted himself
with great enthatlaen to nil art for tbe
arowed purpose of giving to the world a
correct representation of one of tbe few
historical characters whose fame will en
dnre.
An art association was formed, aid a car
toon, designed and executed by Mr. Ltttle
Qeld, was placed In tbe hands of Mr. Gng
Icr, who was employed to engrave It.
This was tbe first Imbues la the history
of art of an attempt to produce a llfe-etie
portrait on steel la pure line. Mr. Gojler
was pecaUarly fitted to undertake this re
markable work. A graduate of SUltgart,
be was engaged for ten years on the "Alias
of Art," published la Herman, which
bronght his name prominently before art
Ms of other lands. In this country, bis
work la the United Slates Trcainry and his
engraving of "Llttleflelde Grant" are well
known lie also bad frequent and faTorable
opportunities to study from life tbe face of
the original Hs attempted a heretofore
untried experiment, and has achieved a
noble success. After years of arduous, pa
tient and skill fat labor, be has completed
the largest Hoe portrait extant. la this
work he has attained the high-water mark
of engraving. Xvery Hoe is drawn with th e
greatest precision, clearness and parity,
martini la tbo direction of the forms, thai
prodocloga very accurate and pleating por
trait.
There has been no attempt on the part of
tbe artist or engraver to substitute the crea
tions of the Imagination for tbe realities of
nature, nor, on tbe other hand, to forget
that the loved faoe of Liu coin should be
rendered In lu best e(Ute. being fully con
scious thai nothing short of tbe Tery high
est excellence, both la portraiture and la
art, would eatlsfy tbe exacting spirit of the
times, and the strong desire on the part of
tbo public to obtain a true portrait of Mr.
Lincoln.
It was our good fortune to know tbe la
mented President during tbe dark hours of
the republic. We saw him tinder various
circumstances and moods. We have seen
him esd and humorous bis face overcast
with the deepest gloom at the news aod
prospect of defeat aod disasters of the na
tion, aod aaon, radiant with the glad tidings
of victory. We haTS seen his Intense Indig
nation flash out when honor aad J utllce have
been outraged, aod his rare smile of be
nignity express the approving "well dons'
to the valiant defenders of the Union. We
have seen Mm leader as a woman as he lis
tened to some heart rsndlog tale of anguish
which moved him to soften the rigorous
rules of warj and again, Immovable and un
yielding as a roclc when he had deliberately
taken bis stand In dsfsneo of Jo slice and
humanity.
We have heard his simplicity of statement,
hare seen him put forth the efforts of his
clear understandings bis rare condensation
of thought, and beheld tbe shreds of so
phistry break before bis resistless logic. We
have seen him, ta short, la public and Id
private, as a husband, father and friend) as
a statesman, patriot, and martyr, and erery
time we look at Ibis new picture, the Im
pression deepeos that It Is the historic por
trait of him.

A statement has been going the rounds of
the newspapers for some time that elec
IricltT has been aoolUd sncceasfnllv as a
bratlrg medium at tbe Hotel Dlea hospital,
la Pari, aod It Is said tbo other large hos
pitals of that city will be warmed by It In
stead of by coal.
Of course we know nothing of the appa
ratus by which this resnlt Is accomplished In
Parts, but we had the opportunity of wit
nessing on Wednesday last at the Wlader
building tha experiments of Dr. Leigh Dor
ton la applying electricity for warming rail
road cars, wblsh were entirely successful
aod satisfactory. The lorentlou consists of
a chain made up of alternate obstructions
and free conductors, arranged compactly by
being reflcxed la grooves, and tbe apparatus
covered by a metallic plate and placed In
front of each seat, In order that the feet of
pane ngers may rest on them. When a cur
rent of electricity Is sent through these
beaters It Is obstructed by the lotsrrenlng
coudnctors of small diameter, and tbe evo
lution of beat Is tbe result! end after tbo
chain has become warmed tbe heat Is ra-
dUled to tbe meUlUc pUte.
Associated with itU apparalae U another,
which Is called a ' circuit ehanger," and by
msani of It a current of electricity of a given
power may be ssst through an almost un
limited number of circuits, and from tbe fact
that the same current Is sent through each
circuit at eaeh revolution of the Instrument,
tho same calorto effects are produced la each.
It may explain Ibis instrument more more
folly by compering It to a musical box, ex
cept that tho points oa It are arranged spi
rally, and Instead of a musical sound a eon
tact Is effected. Now, by revolving this with
great speed an almost continuous current ts
kept up In cash circuit.
The difficulties la the way of applying
chemloal electricity for beating purposes
being tboroughlyunderstoodbytbe In rector,
ho proposes la this application of tbe loren
lion to employ the magneto-electric machine,
and the object of the experiments oa Wednes
day was to test the fitness of tbls machine
for tbe purpose. The Army and Nary De
partments baring tendered Dr. Barton every
facility for making these tests, the largo
magnet machine of the Smithsonian Institu
tion was) brought into requisition, and the
small steam engine In tho basement of the
Winder bulldlrg employed to drlre Mt. Tbo
numerous persons present were amssed at
tho power of the current produced, for with
It twenty feet of number 39 Iron were ren
dered red boti and when It was applied to a
single beater the platlua connections were
meltuj In a short time. Afterwards the
current was applied to several heaters con
nected together, and la a short time the beat
was equally developed la each, thereby
proving conclusively the equal distribution
of the current. Following tbls experiment,
tbe circuit changer was connected with sev
eral of ihe heaters, and It was found to do
Its work thoroughly.
The advantage of employlog Ibis method
of warming railroad cars must be obvious.
Dy connecting tbe magnet mschlns with the
ailo of tho car a motive power was obtained
at scarcely aoy additional cost and regsr Hog
the entire feasibility of this proposition, the
lu outorls supported by the bott sdeotlfle
men lo tbe country, as wslt as by practical
rullroil mui. In cue of having a train
thro tu from the track. Instead of Ulog
roasted alive with red hot stores, tie
passengers escaping the perils of being
crushed by the wreck of the car stand some
chance of escaping a horrible death by burn
ing Upon tho whole tbe experiments were
entirely satisfactory, and demonstrated
clearly the entire feasibility of employing
electricity as a heating agent,
