The two papers ot the rebel archlrce which
have already been published contain the most
plain and palpable proof that many of tbe
principal leaders of the Democratic party In
tbe North were In treasonable correspondence
with tbe enemy during the war, and that
tbey were privy to and actively aided the
Confederate schemes that It was hoped would
cripple Mr Lincoln's administration, compel
hint to make peace on conditions to suit the
rebels, or render his re-election Impossible
Thompson, In his report printed a few days
ago, told Benjamin, tbe Confederate Secre
tary of State, that on bis arrival In Canada
In ltW be beard that there was an organiza
tion known as tbe Sons of Liberty, whose ob
jects and principles he learned M without
much difficulty or delay." Tbey are de
scribed to have been political; lis organiza
tion was essentially military; It bad lu com
manders of divisions, of brigades, of rvgl-
ments, of companies. In the month ot Jane,
1S04, the universal feeling among Its mem
bers leaders and privates was that It was
useless to bold a presidential election. Tbe
belief was entertained and freely eipressed
that by a bold, vigorous and concerted move
ment the three great northwestern States I
Illinois, Iudlana aod Ohio could be seized
aod held. And accordingly we nod Mr.
Thompson, with tbe assistance of bis confed
erates among tbe Democratic leaders, laylo
his plana to seize and bold them A general
council ot tbe Order was held, a day for a
simultaneous uprlslog was appointed, and
McDonald, who was then running for Gov
ernor ot Indiana, was Informed of the entire
loL He, believing that It would Interfere
with his election, In the language of Thomp
son, "threatened to expose all the parties
engaged unless the project was abandoued
Here, then, we hare the facts established
that In 19C4, while the Government was
straining ewry nerve to put down treason la
tbe field, tbe society ol the "ioni of Liberty '
was established In the West, that It was a
military organization, aod that- Its aim and
object was to take three Northern States out
of tbe Union Tbe fact of its existence was
known to the Democratic leaders; Jake
Thompson, Uolcombe and Sanddrs, when
tbey arrived on tbe Canadian line, found out
all about It without any 'trouble or delay "
From wbom7 Obrlonsly from the Demo
cratic leaders. Now, wby did not thw same
gentlemen inform the Federal Government,
give the same Information to Mr Stauton
that tbey gave to Thompson A Cot That
would have beeu tbe part of loyally. Hera
was an organization, treasonable from begin
ulng to end, plotting tbe overthrow of the
Government, In correspondence with and un
der tbe direction of tbe enemy, JuM as much
as any corps In the Confederate service, ap
pointing a day to inaugurate another civil
war-all with tbe full knowledge, If not ap
proval and concurrence, of tbe Democratic
leaders. Tueso gentleman took no pains
whatever to Inform the Government that
protected iheia of the danger In which It
stood Yt by -were McDonald's lips sealed?
Again, Mr McDonald was then and Is now
the lutlmato friend ot tbe II in Thomas A.
Hendricks, tbe preheat candlUte for Gov
ernor of Iudlana. Tbey lived a tbe same
town Is It probable that so prominent a
leader ot the Democracy at Mr Hendricks
was not aware of the plans aud plots ot the
Boos of liberty? that be was liot lu formed of
them by McDonald, who was more concerned
fur tbe Bute of Indiana and his own election
than he was fur tbe stfely of tbe General
Government? Tbe prtsumption Is Irresistible
tbat Mr IlendrLka knew quite as much as
Mr McDonald did, and, If bi, wUltbls loyal
gentleman be. good cuough to eiplalu now
wby It was that be was tbeu silent? Mr
Greeley's organ In New York vouches for bl

ored men to vute for him Perhaps they can

abounding.
The Democratic leaders In the North con

No one who reads the reports, that are now
