Inasmuch as wo have neer heard or met a Democrat who could giro anything like a reason for supporting the cx-edltor ot the Tribune, we read Mr. Thurman's speech wltb a good deal of Inter est la the expectation that he, as a man of enlarged lews, and considerable ability, would be able to gto ns some solid, substan tial argument as a Justification ot his vote. We read the Ohio Senator's speech from beginning to end, and although he said a good deal that was Interesting, mack, that was now, and many things that were as threadbare as the old worn-oat coat of his party, his reasons for the faith that Is In him, and that he would inspire la others, are of tho most unsll factory character. Wo shall summarize Mr Tburmao a reasons as follows, glvln crery point, only a little more brief than he gave them. He said, .first, that Mr. Grvelcy U lo favor of rue-ouelliatlon between all sectlous and all races of the republic Now, why Democrats should cspoctally vote for Mr Greeley for that reason, la preference to General Grant, U something more lhan we can understand. The Republican party has occupied that ury position for the last eight years. It has fought for It, legislated, ar gued, prayed for It for jiars and years Thu Republican party has no war wltb any one, with any section, or with any race. If atfy body wants a war, It Is tho Democracy. Again Mr Thurman sas Mr Greelcr Is In favor of economy. Well, we do not think that Democrats, It they are true, to their old history and to their record, will consider economy a very great virtue iu a candidate. Bill Tweed never ran upon any such platform, never had any such policy, when ho was In office, and until the last twelve months ho was tho head of tho bjmxrailc party. Ho It wa who put Mr Soymour In nomination for tho Presidency four ears ago, who made Mr Hoffman uuvernor of New York, who founded tho national organ of the Demo-racy In Washington, or what he thought to make the nation! organ Mr Thurman cannot point to a State la tho Lnloa controlled by the Democracy tnUha had an economical administration for tho last tea years Take New York, for example In less than three ro nador Dn"crAilc rule dbt in,. 00U,000was piled up. Aalm Mr Greeley's Ohio champion says Mr Greeley is opposed to squandering tho public Uods. Slncowben? Why, be has favored every land grant that ever came before Congress, a the pages of the Tribune will testify, and It was only three years ago that bo came lo this city with his name as a corporator in tho Mediterra nean and Oriental Steam Navigation Com pany, asking millions ot acres of lands for a company that had not and did not pretend to have a cent In Its treasury Mr Thurman gives a tew other reasons equally as silly and absurd as tho preceding The distinguished Senator should have more regard for hi rep utation Ho cannot give aiiy good and suf ficient reason why thu Democracy should support Mr Greeley, because there Is none. Let him put bis own support ot Mr Greeley and the support of his party on its true grounds, viz "Anything to beat Grant." " Oocld I, as an boom eltlMn.glrsmr support to Otoeral tlraoi?
