THE STEVEXS SCHOOL BUILDING. Eeport of Inspector Plowman as to its Condi tion. Inspector Plowman has made a report to As. slstant Engineer B. Oertly or the condition of the Stevens school-house, recently on fire, lie states that "on the 11th Instant (the day on which the fire occurred) 1 visited the building at230 o'clock, and made a careful and minute inspection of the same. The room In which the fire occurrel Is on the second floor, the northwest room. This build ing is heated with steam by indirect radiation; the radiating surface for this room Is attached to the celling, under the floor, and cased on the sides and underneath with wood, and lined with tin, and opening Into the room with a register Immediately over tho radiating surface. The cause of the fire (without any doubt or question In my mind) was, that in sweeping the floor tho radiating surface has been made a receptacle, and necessarily so, for paper, lint, or fibers or all kinds accumulated In a school-room, and settling upon the top or the radiating surlace, and by the Intense heat had become very combustible, and that some time In the past, er perhaps recently, a match or matches hare been swept In, and coat, lng in contact with the heating surface and paper. Ignited at the southeast corner or tho hot-air chamDer, Immediately under the floor or joists; the deposits had apparently been so great as to make heat sufficient to melt the solder or tin of the lining, causing an aperturo for draft, setting fire to the )olst and floor, and charring two or them to a considerable extent, as well as tho lining to the chamber. "It is rortunate for all concemel that the alarm was given promptly, and the fire so quickly checked with but so little damage. Aside from the damages sustained by the fire and in addition thereto the rail or the stairs was broken down by the pressure or the children during the excite ment. That there was so loss or life was attribu table chiefly to the cool and deliberate manner In which the teachers controlled the children during the excitement; and to the citizens who were attracted to the building: by the valuable assistance rendered by them. In regard to the con struction of th Stevens scbool.house building, which was erected some twelve years ago, tinder what supervision 1 am not informed, the capacity cr which is about eight hundred and fifty chll. dren, and Is composed or wood, except the exterior walls, and shows signs or weakness. Egress and Ingress lrom tho upper floors are Insufficient, having but ore staircase, and that of limited pro. portiozs. The Interior indicates unmistakable cvilenccs or weakness, and should during the summer vacation have brick partition walls con structed la lieu or tho present wood ones, and an additional staircase, which I recommend. 1 fur ther teccuimend that the chambers Inclosing the radiating surface be reconstructed tn such a man ner as to allow a circulation of air between sur faces and lnclosure; and 1 further recommend that In all school buildings where registers are placed under tho floor that there be suspended a shield or conical pan under the register as a re ccptaelo box for sweepings, to prevent fire In the inture from the aforesaid cause." XEIHODISH. laeetiEt? of the Preachers of the 21. E. Church. The weekly meeting of the pastors or the M. E. Church or this city was held yesterday morn ing In the parlors of the I oundry church. Kellglous services were conducted by liev.Samuel Shannon, ol I nlon chapel. Alter the usual routine business of the meeting was through. Key. J. 1" Newman, D. D., called the attention or the preachers to the fact that the annual conference would convene In Metropolitan M. E. church ontbehrstor March next, and that. In accordance with the agreement or the preach, en' meeting several weeks ago, this was the day lor the reports from the pastors or the number of homes provided in each charge Tor the entertain mest ol the preachers and lay delegates of the annual conference. He estimated that it would be necessary to furnish homes for three hundred persons, and upon the call or the pastors homes were reported for two hundred and eighty. This leaves a small margin for application for the en tertainment or the preachers or the conrerence, and tiiose or our citizens who wish to entertain these preachers had better report at once to Iter. Dr. Newman. It was reported that a call had been made by Itev. Messrs. Moody and Sankey, now In Phila delphia, for a convention or clergymen and others in that city. The selling of articles that had aeeaafetti la the dead-letter department of the General Post Office was femmenced yesterday taarliiaic at the auction rooms of Duncassci'urotatfI auction eers, corner of Ninth aj d strreli northwest. Sales of this nature xur annually, and are ne cessitated to mafci raena the depository In the dead-letter office for etheTSbttng received. Every effort is m'ide to and both ttra party sending them and those for whom they ere intendel, and when no proper claimant eaz be discovered they are disposed of la the manner indicated, after having Dektt neiaa reasonable lengtnoi timeio dcchiou for. At the auction begun yesterday there were 8,577 articles or various descriptions to bo disposed or, and it will pnftably require the enttroweek to complete the sale. Many of the things offered are of a trlfilngnature, such as neckties, pieces of ribbons, pocket handkerchiefs, velm. skeins or silk, needles, -socks, stockings, scarfs, collars, bowr. elastics. wristlets, kid gloves, othInr,baby Ehtrts, etc., which will not bring prices scarcely sufficient to pay the postage expended on them. In what istnown as tne "registered letter list," however, may be found a number or such valua ble articles as diamond rings, gold watches, sets of jewelry, lockets, lace shawbvglove and sleeve buttons, medals, buckles and lead pencils. Fur ther down tho schedule Is any quantity or sheet music, books, albums, chromes and engravings, all crtbetn to be sold before the sale closes. Yesterday morning there 'was a goodly number of persons in attendance, and ror that day it was derided to dispese or the first fire hundred articles on the list, dividing the day into two sales, beginning at 10 a, E. and 1 p. m. The auc tioneer did not dwell long on the disposition of anything ouered, and trequently knocked the article down on the first bid. The thing put up generally was or so little value that not much or aprlcecculJ be expected font, and five and tea cents ror tome time appeared the varying figures. Now and then forty and fifty cents would bo reached, but these bids were exceptional cases. As the schedule is 'gone over and the more val uable articles reached the contest will doubtless become more spirited, and the prices obtained greatly exceed thosa of yesterday. The sale will be more interesting to ladies than gentlemen, as the goods to be sold are chiefly of their wear, and never having seen ser vice are equal tonow, and can be purchased ror almost notbtng. The only changes from monot onous bidding yesterday were when the crier would exclaim, "Look to your catalogues:" Num ber so and so, "a laco collar," "threo yards or lace," "a lace handkerchief," five yards of rib bon," "fine lace edging," t-c. Then the ladles would appear to wake up to the Importance of the occasion, and for a few minutes a lively con test would ensue for the possession or the lmport antlace. In one instance a collar was knocked down Tor 40 cents and five persons claimed it as their bid; it was finally settled by reselling it lor 45 cents. Neckties were at a discount and in little de mand at five cents apiece. Ten cents worth of blue, scarlet or some other colored ribbon was knocked off at Intervals or five minutes. Sewing machine and other needles had no show, and could scarcely be given away.whlle the bows would sot be taken at any prion. Had they been pinned on the masculines, and the possessors gone with them at the time or sale, probably the auctioneer would have round the bids augmenting to flatter ing figures and the rcmales forcing the market, knowing this to be leap year. However, no beaux were offered, and the sale was correspond ingly dull in that respect. It Is not intended to follow the catalogue direct throughout the sale, but selections will bo made from the different schedules and offered for competition tn the bid ders. In this manner the Dead Letter Office sale will be continued from dar to day until all the articles have been disposed of. ALHONEBS FOR THE POOR. There Is on exhibition in the show window or Ellis' music store a valuable addition to noted modern specimens or Illuminated writing, and it may reasonably be doubted whether the works or the old matters, preserved on vellum, afford a finer illustration of skill, taste and coloriog with the pen. Mr. J. W. Stockton, ol the third an ditor's office. Is certainly entitled to rank among artists ror this elegant production. The subject Is a series of resolutions from the Old Dominion Commandery, K. The resolutions are written within a border or s andards and crossed swords. In the tri. Last nlth". aoout 8 (.'aces: u a young man liv ing oi Sixth street approached his house from F i street on his way home, he observed aworcah 1 come oat or the gate, closely enveloped in a shawl which was drawn over her head, almost conceal ing her entire face, but enough was exposed to show, as she passed beneath the ras-lamp, that she was colored. His suspicions were aroused, and he watched her moverents. She walked slowly down Sixth street, gUndug back over her shoulder every few steps. Tee yoang man. after watching her unll she passed into darkness be yond the light of tbe gas-lamp, then entered his aatejustasthe servant came to the door, and as it was opened, the light from the gas In the hall fell upon a mysterious looking bundle lying on the door stop. He asked the servant II the bell had tung, and receiving an affirmative answer told her not to touch the bundle until he round a policeman, for evidently the colored woman he had seen leave the door had deposited the bundle on the step. Following the woman, who con tinued to walk along very leisurely, until she entered City Hall park, the young man turned Into Seventh street, where he met two policemen, to whom he related the circumstances. Together they then went back to tha house, where all was excitement with the members of the family, whose minds were filled with visions of a mur dered lniant, its throat cut from ear to ear, or the rope with which it had bees strangled yet about its neck. Eves the policemen hesitated a moment before touching the terrible bundle, but one or them lifted it up, while all leaned forward to catch the first glance or the murdered child, and tearing off the newspaper out rolled a dead coose! Not a dressed goose, but one which had evidently died and had lam for two or three days. The only inference that can be drawn lrom tho singular conduct or the woman in leaving the goose upon the steps is that she had been a ser vant in a house in the neighborhood, had been discharged, and took this mode of revenge. John O'Connor Power's lectsrj. Mr. John O'Connor Power, whose eloquent ad vocacy In the British Parliament (or which body ho Is still a member) or the rights of Ireland, has endeared him to the hearts of his countrymen every where, will, as announced in another column, deliver a lecture at Ford's opera-house on next Thursday evening. His subject "The Condition or Ireland, Social, Political and Industrial" Is well calculated to draw forth his full powers as a close observer, a deep thinker, a logical reasoner and an earnest advocate. The reputation he has earned In other cities justifies us In believing he will do bis subject full justice. We trust he will have a large and attractive audience. How to Rise. It was Wendell Phillips who said, in language as rcrelble as it was truthful, that "it IS the dol lar saved, over expenses on Saturday evening that makes the account grow In tho savings bank, that makes the Individual prosperous, that gives nlm a happy home, leads to his advancement-and ultimately makes him an Influential and useful member of society." The German American Savings Bank, corner oi Seventh and F streets, pays Interest on de posits. Of Public Interest. For thirty years there has teen no improvement in the composition or a porous plaster. The re cent discovery or Capclne and its addition to an improved porous plaster has Introduced to the consumers and the public an article of progress. The objection to the ordinary article is its slow action. BessoVs Cai-cike Porous Plaster overcomes this great objection by eilectlng in a few hours what the ordinary porous plaster ac complishes in days and weeksof continuous wear. Bessos's Cai-cike Porous Plabters are pre ferred ta all others on the following grounds: First Their composition is or as Improved na ture, and combined with the recently discovered vegetable principle Cap. clhe which, as a powerful and unerring specific, has sever been equaled In the history or true medicine. .They operate with astonishing vigor, bring almost lm- mediate relief, and cure more speedily and with greater certainty than any knows plaster, liniment or compound. Second They possess all the merit of the ordi nary porous plaaterwlth above addition, and will cure all tho various difficulties for which they have been esteemed In as many hours as the ordinary article effects in days and weeks of continuous wear. Third They are a genuine pharmaceutical pre paration, skllllully combined, or the highest order or merit, purely vegetable, contain neither metal nor mineral poisons. Indorsed by physicians, and are tn no sense a patent medicine. SEABcnv fc Jonssov. Pharmaceutlcarchemists, N. Y. To be obtained for twenty-five cents. For sale by Drew t. GIbbs, D. P. Ulnkllng, it.
