Funeral of tho Lata Francis Ilanna
The funeral of Mr. Francta Hanna, one of
the oldest atlieni of Washington, took place yet.
terday morning, from St. Aloyiloni Church, and

Tho remains were eneased In a walnut casket,
furnished by Harvey, eorered with floe black
elotb, handsomely ornamented. After tho ser
vices at the church, tbe remains were botno to
tho heart by Messrs. Cox, Davidge, McDonald,
Ooddard, Woodward, Cleary, Mohan and Mail,
the palLbearera. The cortege proceeded to
Mount Olivet Cemeetry, where tbo remains
were Interred.

Suicide of aTouag Woman
On Saturday, febrnaryll, about 12:30 p.m.
two boys named John and Erwln Murphy, dls.
revered In tbe old quarantine burying ground at
Tompkins Til le, Staten, Island, the body ot a
young woman, apparently about twenty-two
years of age, lying under an elm tree near Can
tral avenue. She was a handsome girl, with
light brown hair, blue eyss and fair complexion.
Her height was fire feet two Inches. She was
dressed In a slate colored alpaeadrsis, with aa
oreriklrt ef the same material, and wore over
ber shoulders a dark striped shawl. There was
a mote on her left cheek and a ehaied gold ring
on tbe third Soger of her left hand. There were
no marki or violence on her person.
Tbe body, by order of Coroner Demp
rcy, ot New Brighton, was removod to
tbe undertaker's shop or Btlchacl Oates, a
Stapleten, where It now lies awaiting ldentiflea

The cue of John C. Chapman, charted
witbaeepioga place where lottery er policy
tickets are sold, was called up, and Gen. Hlnkle,
one of the counsel for the defendant, asked the
continuance ef tbe ease on account of the sickness
of his associate in the defence. District Attorney
Wells replied that every effort had been made to
bring these ease" to trial, and they were met by
delay constantly. When brought Into the Police
Court they came up on appeal, aad convic
tion bad been scored In one Instance, and that
was taken to tbe General Terra on apneal There
a motion was made for Its dismissal, and the pros
ecution furnished a brief oa sbort notice, and at
tbe same time tbe appellant admitted no stand
log, and agreed to come back to tbe Criminal
Court with another case, and there have the
legal points argued. This dlnerence occurs In
thcconitruettonof the statute, tbe policy deal,
ere maintaining that under the lottery act they
had a license permitting tbeeonduct of tbe bust
ness. While these appeals had been in abeyance,
the dealers in policy were still pursuing the same
pursuit, aod In fact had become bolder In their
operations, by putting persons on tbe street for
the disposal or tickets. They were debauching
the poor and needy, imposing upon the ignorant,
and if tbere wae any law to restrain them, it was
only justice that It should be enforced. Instances

to their policy shops and renewed operauons,bld
ding defiance to law. Tbe com to unity should be

the leading counsel employed In the caso. He

clients to cease selling tickets until tbe cases
weredlsposcd of and they had told him that they
would do eo. He bad no reason to believe tbat
they bnt violated their word. His Honor sild
tbat If these partus set tbe ease at defiance and
went on with their operations, regardless of tbe
suits hanging over, speedy action, tor the benefit
oi the community, ought to be promptly taken.
If the police should report thitt these shops are
now open and tbe policy business In operation,

Moses little shop, a portion of which she de
clared to be her property, knowing It by certain

neck had beea made. She accused Moses of hav
Ing stolen ber pig, and the rase came up before
Judge Mac Art bur yesterday. Tbe testimony
was very piggish none or tbe witnesses squealed

pork bad got Into Jones larder or not. Ihe de
fendant proved a previous excellent character,
and tbe jury concluded tbat he had no more hog
than belonged to him, and therefore acquitted
him of the charge.

trict, sitting in General Term, pasied an order
forbidding attorneys or other persons from taking
papers from the files In the Clerk's offlee,
and directing tbat all those having been with'

compiled with tbe Instructions of thecourt, but
others have not, and an examination of the de
positaries for these records will show tbe receipts
of attorneys who hare thus far disregarded the
order. Instances occur frequently of parties who
hare been In tbe habit el taking papers for exam.

In addition to tbe regular Monday morning
drill, the four companies of marines stationed at
tbe barracks adjoining the Navy Yard wsre re
viewed yesterday morning by the Secretary ef
mo navy.
The display was witnessed by quite a large
gathering of ladles and gentlemen, wbo were In
vited to attend. Nearly all ef the residents la
the neighborhood poured Into tbe barracks and
formed a semi-circle around the parade grounds.
At eleven o'clock tha marines were
called out npoa the parade grounds.
The marching, and rapidity of every movement
was the height of military perfection. Shortly
after 11 o'clock Secretary Bobesoa arrived aad
was conducted from the officers quarter! aorosi
the grounds, by Major Nicholson, temporarily In
command of the post.
The four companies, commanded respectively
by Captains Nokes, Williams, Good we 11 and
Goodall, went through many difficult evolutions
In a style that challenged admiration. Then the
companies were drawn up tn battalion line, with
colors flying. The Secretary, accompanied by Ma
jor Nicholson, advanced towards the line, which
was the signal for a salute from the Marine Band.
Alter an Inspection the line was broken Into eom
panics, and headed by the band.marehed In review
around the spacious grounds. The battalion was
commanded byiMaJor Haywood. Whentbe ser
vice was finished Majorllaywood commanding
put tbe men through a number of movements,
such aa marching by close column, changing rrontl
and marching companies by fours. A line of
battle was then formed, which stretched entirely
across tbe grounds. The movement was a beauti
ful one. Toe long line was perfectly maintained
during tbe whole of the march from one end of
the grounds to theotber and return. The Inspec
tion was closed with a dress parade.
