ter from tho Secretary of State, inclosing a
letter from the CousuMleueral at Havana,
giving an official and detailed account of the
sickness aud death of Hon, J, E. Leonard.
The letter states that Mr. Leonard's visit to
Cuba was entirely of a nersonal and private
character. He had letters to prominent people
in iuiM, anu, alter transacting ine mibineas
that had tnken him to Cuba, bu was about to
leave ou Ids return home.
He was taken with a chill while ou his way
to the steamer, and fearing he would be seri
ously ill, he returned to his hotel aud took to
his bed, which ho never left until he was car
ried out dead. Every attention was paid him,
hut without avail. The letter adds that th
death of prominent a personage at one of

this season of the year, had frightened other
