His retirement from the ball of Cougreu will put to ret omo of its sweetest reverberations. We regret this fact. Mr Tlf.DEV haslet go the Democratic party in New York, and It Is npldly going to piece. His tur'l of money is spent, and he thinks be cannot hold the sickly concern up by the till any longer. Jonx KtLLV will now try his hand as a leader, and the result will he that he will have a fight a clay Inside the party, but It will hurt no body outside of It. Things are getting just lovely in the Empire Plate, Tub Ptvplf'i AJivcntc, published in this city says "The threat of the W that. when the Democratic party comes Into u power in 1M. it will drive the negroes " from the city, deserves the attention of every colored voter in this country. With "out a 'solid South' that party cannot " come iuto power, and there can Inr no 141 solid Ponth unless the colored voters tither vote the Democratic ticket or re- main away from the poll".7 The Democrats of Ohio have become seri ously alarmed at their prospects, and have resorted to their traditional swindle by im porting voters from Kentneky and otbtr Southern States Under this process they begin to assume a confidence that Is not real, and which will rapidly ooze out on to-morrow, for the Republicans are fore warned, and hence arc preparing to make short work with the imported voters where ercr they make their appearance. Now tub lioy strikes his father. The New York Commercial Adi either, lira II J. Hastings' paper, attacks Tjil'risjw Weed's recent political utterances, denouncing his history as in accurate and his suggest Iocs as mischievous. This it knows It cau do with impunity, for Mr. Wkfd is a most indul gent parent. We can but express our as tonishment at the performance, though we are uot disposed to pirtisaulze the conflict Vi'e presume Mr Wfed will pass it by as n piece of narrates sauce on the part of the boy. Tomorrow election will be held in Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, and West Vlrglula. In three of these States the contest will be sharp, and though Grcenbackera and Na tionals are uniting their full strength they are damaging the Democrats more than the Republicans, and the Indications are that a Republican victory will be scored in each. West Virginia is hopelessly Demo cratic, though Colonel IlUEn, who is a thor ough Republican, seems confident of his election to the House from the second dis trict. THE Raltimore Gatttte tajs It is costing General Grant Mf50 a day to keep out of "the country, ami a poor man cant stand " that sort of thing very long." Expensive as it would seem to be, we have no doubt the Democratic party would readily pay him $100 a day If he would stay out of the country until after 160. It Is thought however, that his engagement at home dur ing that year would render it Inexpedient for him to make any arrangement with that side. He Is giving them much trouble now, lie will give them more then. The Norfolk Dag-Book, which is an in dependent Journal with Democratic pro clivities, in speaking of Mr Ooodc, sajs very polutedly ; " We contend that it would " be more profitable foe the people of the district to penulou Mr Goodic off with " $3,000 a year to keep him out of Congress " ami tend some one there who could have ' influence' to attend to the duties of Con "giesMiian, fur as to a Congressman in M Conrt s.1 without 'Influence,' ho is about " as vorlhlevt for service to his people ns " the old saying of ' u cat lu h ll without 'claws' would be to serve Uelf." The Intelligence from the Hon. Charleh loiTERa gerrymandered Democratlo di triet is of the most encouraging mid honc ful character. General Ginu, who is very intelligent, aud not over sanguine ns to Ohio politics, gives it as bis deliberate opin ion that Mr. Fcutlu will pull through the 4,(00 gerrymandered Domouatw majority ugiuiut him and corns out triumphantly. lie -ays: Well, wo are sure of carrying Seneca Count j, which will he overcoming TOO of their ma jority, aud we are working very hard to elect mm. i nail upca every uuy aui evening i until election. " The war Is over, and we have accepted " the situation," shout the ex-rebels of the South whenever allusion Is made to their participation In " the late unpleasantness." "The war Is over," echo their Democratic allies and friends lu tho North. TheRonth ern people have returned to their allegiance If they erred, they have repented, and It is Infamous and unpatriotic to harrow op their feelings by reminders of tho past ; or, as they put it, " to wave the bloody shirt." Let us forget and forgive. Let us live in pence with the South, for they are willing to let b)gones be bygone. When these Democrats are told that the South still treasures the doctrine of secession ; that the leaders there will not permit bygones to be bygones, the assertion is iudignautly denied. When they are told, furthermore, that to have been a Union man during the war is a dis grace in the eyes of the va.it majority of the people of the South, their indignation rises to a boiling point, and they fall to find langungo to glre adequate expression to their denials; but the plain facts, ficU which cannot be disproved, are that no Union man need hope for political recognition In the South. He is to that people an outcast. If lie goes there from the North and invests his money to build the waste places aud dares to express a political sentiment, he Is denounced as u carpet bagger. If he was Southern Wu und was a Union mnn he is n sc.illawag aud a traitor to hU country in the estlmi lion of these rebels. The case of Hon. John Hancock, of Texas, affords a good illustration of South ern seutlmtutou this point. Mr Hancock was born uf Virginia parents in Alabama He was educated wholly lu the South. He settled in Tex a in 1317, uud was a member of the Texas Legislature in lboO-'Ol. Ho was expelled from that body for refulug to take the oath of alhgiance to the Confeder ate States, and throughout the war he re mained loyal and true to the Union, Alter reconstruction, when the Republican party was fully in power, and when it was neces sary that the right sort of men should be sent to Cuugrcb if tlie Statu hoped to be represented, Joiiv Hancock was elected by Texas Democrats to the Forty-second Con gress, and aflerwaid to the Forty-third and Forty-fourth His Democratic conblitueuts never charged him withu failure to perform his whole duty as a Representative. It was too early then to denounce a man bccauie he had always been f ilthful to his country The Southern rebels moved by degrees. The first step was to dc feat him lor nomina tion In IS?'!, and lu tho place oi this native Itorn Southerner they sent to tho Fuity-llfth Congress a renegade I'tuutylvuuinu imiuod Uiijimngs, who lnui in o a cltueu of Texas in lHi, and de.vclo,cd into u full-fledged m1h1!h1u;1 The time bid uot yet (uiui to denounce Ham out openly for hU Union-i-.ni Hut thU vear thofrultwas comideud ripe. Tlie rebels and their Northern allies will have poseeastcn of the Senate after the 1th of March. They hope also to get the next House of Representative, nnd now the Texans show their hands. H vNCocK, hav ing been n Union man during the wnr, will not bo a pthnt tool in the hands of the reb els in carrying out the scheme they have In view. Having been agiln nomimted he is opposed solely on the ground of his Union ism. A committee appointed by Democrats in his district have issued an Address, which is published In the Austin pipers, nnd in the course of this address the committee said: And agiln, Mr. Hancock made himself his. torle by demonstrating his want of featty to the Democratic pirty lu this State, when, In 1N ho followed his own ronvictions of rbrht aztlnU the counsel aud action of an almost undivided party In control of tlie State on qmslimi of the greatest Importance that ever ch il lei i Red the attention of any political party in this or any other country. Ho fullomd con victions at Unit time against the Dernocritlc pirty on qutftlrm Invohlmr principles that wtredcarjr to the people of his Mate tlinuthe continuance of poIltUiil vtl-ilence; questions that were then piegiisut with w.ir, and winch afterward wir fettled by the Hrbltrimeut of tlit-word. And while ns putUs to that arbi tration we have siibmilhd, ami now submit to the determlimtion as final, wo hold now, as then, that there weie Involved quen Lions ti)oii nhkh staUflineii und patriots niUht well, as they dUl, dliltr even at the cost of life and toaco, however deir thoono and sweet thn other , aud that on such luucs a luan, however wise he mav eonctivit hlmtelf to be, Is not at lllcrty to al mi id on hlicuuiitrj and espouse the cause of tho enemj because of his prlvuto opinions. AndyetMr.IUNCntKilMthN. Fifth. Wc catmot sunnort Mr. If ixootk. be cause hyduiiigto we should otreud our reelings of Kclf-iespect. If we can conscientiously con fer huiiors upon hlui, we should cease to teach our children or the generation that tollows them to read with pride of tho devotion to principle that was illustrated by the lives of ALnEUT S dm v Johnson and RouertIILlr, who, Instead of dimrtlng the standards raised uy llielr Matin, native ami adopted, In the same btrtiffgle, signalized their heroic natures by throwing themselves from distant places Into the outstretched arms of their country, the one to seal his devotion br the ifift of Ida life and the other by leading her shattered armies uuui tno iud or iicr glory set. Let Union men everywhere ponder over this address. When n man had to haven coin pant ively clean record to get Into Con gress, John Hancock was sedected to repre sent Texas Democrats in Congress. Now that the rebels hojie to gilu, by the aid of Northern doughfaces, what they lost lu war, IltXCUcKH old Union record is used as t club to break his political back. Tills case leads to Another important re flection. Texas, like all the Hon I hern States, 1 inviting emigration from the Noitli. If n man, Southern born nnd n citizen of Texas for thirty-one years, is to bo tabooed because of his Union sentiments at this lato day, what show will n Northern man have, uuless in going to Texas he shall lie content to leave behind him nil political independence? Are the people of the North willing to Indorse the sentiments of the rebels who denounce Mr. Hancock? Theytlo indorse It every time they permit the election of a Democrat to Congress, localise it is only by tho aid of Northern Democrats that the rebels can re gain power in this land. TIIK FIltST AHUilNIA IlIfTRICT. The Hon.
