Wall Street Transactions The Latest Qnotatious in Stocks and Bonds Xew York and Bal timore Produce Markets London and Paris Money Markets, Tlie Ibllowins oliservations on the transaction? In the financial markctyesterday, togetlierwith hlRhost, lowest, and closing stock quotations, arc furnished by the banking-house of H. D. Cooke, jr., & Co., 1192 F street, Washtncton, D. C.: The market has been exceedingly dull and Inactive, it at many times beinsdiulcult to execute large trades. A little after noon it was announced that the Secre tary of tbe Treasury had purchased 3,000,000 sixes. This feature tended to boom prices a little, making them reach the highest figure of the day. Market closes irregular, half the list havingan advance of from li to 2per cent, one-fourth of the list closing where they opened, the other one-fourth snfteringa decline of from to per cent. The market has been void of outside pressure, and most everything has seemed to hang upon tire decision of the Secretary of the Treasury in regard to the national banks. It would seem as if the public were layjiis.uncalled-for imnor- tance upon the decision in this matter. Speculators may make use of it to influence the market for the moment ; bnt whether the delsIon is favorable to the banks or not, the money will soon find its-way back to the market If desired by the hanks. In the one in stance the bonds will be redeposited by tlie bunks who have taken them up and the legal tenders will be returned to them; and, on the other baud, if the Secretary decides this cannot be done under the law, the banks may deposit their bonds and have new cir culation of their own banks Usned to them. In some few instances the bank may hare to wait until new notes are printed bearing their names: but, as the Comptroller of the Currency has somo ??0,00iyi0,Jof notes of the different national banks on hand, it is to be supposed t liar a portion of t he demand can be sup plied at once should it be called for by the banks. It lias been remarked in former letters that the compilations of prices of railroad earnings show a marked falling oT, which would lead prudent iuento ask the question whether some stocks were not selling above their intrinsic worth. The willingness of the public to convert each new feature which aiises into a full argument might prove that they were at a loss for argument to boom prices. Jay Gould and his associates have shown their will ingness to spend millions of money to keep the mar ket up, in order to float their Southwestern scheme, Iron Mountain, new Western Union, tc. Whether they can do this or not remains to be sen. The board of directors of the Union Pacific met to-dayand declared a quarterly dividend of lf per cent., making it a 7 per cent, stock. It was rumored that it was to have been made an 8 per cent, stocic The action of tlie board will probably disappoint many who went long on Union Pacific to-day on this latter rumor. It turns out that, although the last statement of this road Is quite favorable, it is not as good as many had been led to expect by the very exaggerated reports regard ing it. Still the road makes an admirable showing." The board of directors was elected to-day, and is the sameas the board elected March 4, 1830, with one ex ception. August Schell, of New York, takesthe place formerly occupied by C. S. Greely. Slimy are looking for an advance In Grangers on the strength of the tact that there are very heavy grain freights awaiting transportation as soon as the roads are freed from snow and ice. It must be borne in mind, however, that the same warm weather which will enable the muds to run will also open navigation. It is stated by one well versed in this matter that ten days like to day would make it possible to commence navigation on the Krie and other large canals, which are heavy transporters. Besides this, the lakes would also be freed from ice. In view of this possibility many of the railroads in the vicinity of Chicago and Buffalo, have already commenced to cut their freight rates. We do not draw any conclusions from these facts, merely giving them for what they are w orlh.
