SWINDLING SANTA ANNA. What III Private Secretary Sayn About His Shameful Treatment Here. Dr. M. M. "Do Jleza, of this city, once private secretary to Sauta Anna, sends us the fol lowing startling letter. "I noticed inyourpopu lar paper of Friday morning a few lines concern ing General Santa Anna's affairs in New York, and judging that you have been wrongly informed, not only in relation to Santa Anna himself, but also in regard to the diamonds referred to, I assume the liberty of correcting the statement. I had the honor to be private secretary to that illustrious general long before his coming to this country; therefore I think I have reason to know all about his financial transactions. It is well known that General Santa Anna incurred no debts at all during his rcsidejiee in this country. We came here with means sufficient enough to meet all our jwrsonal wants while engaged in our political movements against Maximilian and his allies; but. unfortunately, we fell into the hands of some unprincipled men in Xew York, who, taking ad vantage of our ignorance of the English language, and through many false representations, succeeded in swindling the General out of a large quantity of money and real estate. The diamonds to which you referred to were obtained from him t?anta Anna) through a fraud ulent and shameful transaction. The diamonds were of eighteen degrees purity, and were set on two very fine gold crosses; one of them called, or representing the "Black Eagle of Prussia," was valued at St. Thomas, West Indies, at f 100,000 in gold: and the other, representing the "Order of Uuadalupe,' Mexico, was valued at S50.000. These two ercRcs were given to a steamship company in Xev. York as a collateral security for S2",000 ; said amount was claimed as damages by the company, and to which pretentioff'Sauta Anna, by reason of hi- political position then, could not help himself from law proceedings w ith which he was seriously threatened by said company. So the public will Icam with astoni-hment that through these fraud ulent and false representations wo both, Santa Anna and mylf, became the victims of dishon orable men, whom, with the assistance of some imblic officers in Xcw York and Stnten Island, succeeded not only in robbing us of our money, valuables, and property, but also in depriving us or our personal liberties, for we were deceived and imprisoned in a public jail, ignored by the legal authorities and by our friends also. General Santa Anna died in 1S67.S3 years of age. He made no will, and went to his grave without leaxing even a memorandum concerning liis val uable crosses left in Xew York under the keeping ofX-.id steamship company; but as I am iu pos sesion of all the evidence, and being also an in tended party in his estate in more than 815,000, 1 hae employed an honorable lawyer in Xcw York to claim the afore-meutioned diamonds as be longing to the estate of General Santa Anna for the benefit of his heirs in Mexico, and the settle ment of my claim as well.
