We hope every man, who can, will be on hand. A GRAM) Or- ! in the a Through the courtesy of < ur . 1:1, and distinguished friend. Dr. S. i - . I Buatt, we have been permitted if peruse and re-peruse the W'.mi, ? fully interesting spec .'it which h. delivered before the Bastrop Liter ary Society on the evening of the lfith of March. The subject, as we said last week, was the character of the il lustrious Napoleon. The Doctor took the position that Xapoleon was prompted, in his public acts, by a devoted love for his country. His arguments were the consequent out-croppings of a studied, logical deduction. His inferences were founded upon an unbroken chain of the profoumlest reasoning. Iiis assertions flowed from a fountain of metaphysical calculation. For instance, listen at the Doctor's def inition and introduction of the sub ject: "This is one of those peculiar questions of relative affection of self, for the welfare of others ; or, otherwise expressed, exalting self by promoting the prosperity of those, incapable of supervising their own interests in life ; which, as an intelligent ambition, dictates that which is always condusive to this and in results as a base from which, the desire springs as the central head, or figure of its own creation; the adverse to this uni versai law as results of effect, a: simply the evidence of a brutal arm, without intelligence to guide, or temper the power of its cause." Never have we heard a subject for debate presented with such tersness and pointed rhetoric as are displayed in the prelude which we have just quoted from the learned Doctor's speech. Just consider the sublime significance of that strik ingly original expression, "this is one of those peculiar questions of relative affection of self," and then I ponder upon the stupendous depth j of this : "For without an antece dent suggestion which, we may term desire, there never would be even the manifestation of an exist ence." Such a thought! And clothed in such beautifully coined words ! Further on the Doctor, in speaking of the prompting motives "This, is gemuo, of that nature from the Eternal Cause himself, developed as spirits in this phenominal feature of mat ter as man." Seldom does it fall to the lot of a country village denizen to listen to such seemingly inspired thoughts as that last quoted. The entire speech is full of such rare gems of original thought, which are but the faithful and brilliant reflection of a gigantic, a wonderful mind. Dr. Buatt is truly a prodigy—an extra ordinary genius. We are sorry his aspirations do not lead him into the toilsome fields of literature. M ueh more fame and honor wauld wreath his brow than can be ob tained by extracting teeth. Those of our readers, who would like to enjoy a rare literary treat, can call on the doctor, and we think he will treat them as kindly as he did us—lend them the manu script of the speech, from which we have made these quotations. It will pay you to read the whole speech. Tribute of Respect. At a meeting of the Bastrop Bar in respect to the memory of the late Judge S. G. Parsons, deceased, Hon. J. Harvey Brigham was re quested to act as chairman and F. Vaughan, Esq., as secretary. On motion of Capt. Dunn a com mittee of the following gentlemen were appointed to draft resolutions : Col. Ii. B. Todd, W. T. Hall and C. T. Dunn. Whereupon they reported the fol lowing : Whereas, ail-wise Providence in His wisdom has seen fit to remove from our midst our most worthy fellow-citizen, the Hon. S.
