m wify genebài, eweet sfâame R ebel .— A gentleman of St, P#ul, < Minnesota, who was formerly a non commissioned officer in Generel (then Captaiu) Ewell's company of the regular ai my, wrote a f riendly letter to his old commander a few' weeks ago, and has received a re ply, dated at Fort Warren, on the 1,'Uh ult,„ which is conimunicatodi to the St'. Faul Pioneer. Ewcll says : * * * "IcamefromTorizo^a, sick, in the spring of 1861. Stdid in the country, in Virginia, my State, tryiug to get well, and fouiid the war, to my bitter regret, was being started. All the highest United States army officers were resigning, except General Scott, and he published a letter that the Uni ted States would divide into four parts thus showing that he thought all was over. A United States Sen ator said he would march a North ern regiment to help the South for every one sent against her. Noth ing was done with either of these men, or with others whose deeds we,re treasonable. A member of Coügr^sB, from California, made a public speech calling upon the South to resist the election of Mr. Lincoln, "Now I found myself forced to fight against my brothers aud all my nearest and dearest relatives— against my own State, when many abler men than myself contended she was right. By taking up the side of the South, I forfeited a hand some position, fine pay and the ear nings of twenty years hard service. Al! the pay I drew in four years in the South was not as much as one year's pay iu the old army. r ibc greatest political favoritism against me I ever had, was from Mr. Davis, after the Mexican war. "It is hard to account for my course, except from a painful sense of duty—I say painful, because I believe few were more devoted to the old country than myself ; and the greatest objection I had to it was bcoause of my predilection for a strong one. Now I see persons who did what they could to bring about the war, in high favor in the North, holding high office. It wan like death to me. "On the way here from New Mex ico, in L"8'»l, I volunteered my ser vices to fight the Texans, threaten ing a United States post, and was careful to do nothing against the United States before resigning." *1 have asked to be allowed to take the oath of allegiance and re turn to my duties as a citizen. 1 see, though, that many persons, active in theïïrsTsteps in bringing this war about, are at liberty, while I am here with no very good pros pect of getting out, while my wife is under arrest in St. Louis and has been since April, but up to this time has utterly failed even to find mtt why she is arrested. Neither she nor myself have the slightest idea of the cause of her arrest." A B alloon D uel .—Perhaps the most remarkable duel ever fought took place in 1803. It w*s peculiar French in its tone, and could hardly have oc curred under any other than a 1* rcnch state of society. M. Le Pique has a quarrel, arising out of jealousy con cerning a lady engaged at the Iinperi ■ al Opera. They agreed to fight a duel to settle their respective claims and in order that the heat of angry passion should not interfere with the polished «legance of the proceeding, they post poned the duel for a month, the lady ugreeing to bestow her smiles on the survivor of the two, if the other was killed, or, at all events, this was infeiv red by the two men, if not actually ex pressed. The duelists were to fight in ithe air. Two balloons were construct ed, precisely alike. On the day de noted, Le Granpre and his second en tered the car of one balloon, Le Pique and his second that of the other; it was in the Garden of the Tuilbries, amid na immense concourse of spec tators, The gentlemen were to fire, not at «&eh other, but at each other's balloons, in order to bring them down by the -eseape of gas; and, as pistols might hardly have served the purpose, each aeronaut took a blunderbuss in his car. At a given signal the ropes that re tained the cars were cut and the bal loons ascended. The wind was moder ate and kept the balloons in about their ordinal distance of eight yards apart. When half a mile above the surface of the earth a preconcerted signal for firing was given. M. Le Pique ired, but missed. M. Le Ciranpre fired and sent a ball through he Pique's balloon. The balloon col lapsed, the car descended with fearful rapidity, and Le Pique and his second were dashed to pieces. Le Granpre continued his ascent triumphantly, aud terminated his «rial voyage suc cessfully at a distance of apyen lea gues fre» Paris.
