M. Laboullaye bas just published a
long article in Le* Débats, urging
Spain and Brazil to take warning by
the convulsions which worked the
death of slavery in the American
States, and abolish the institution be
fore they are overtaken by like calam
ities.
At the Saratoga ball, English aris
tocracy was represented by the
daughter of the duke of Newcastle,
richly dressed in white, embroidered
with pale green, with a zouave jacket,
diamond and pearl necklace. Tbe
dress, with her !%ht hair and whit«
complexion, made her quite attrac
tive.
The Doubleday court-martial, _ in
Philadelphia, spent 140 days in trying
Mr. Cozzens, at an expense to the
country of over $22,000 and after they
had convicted him, he paid $50 to a
lawyer, who had released him on a
writ of habeas corpus.
The carriage which was presented
to President Lincoln by a number of
gentlemen in New York city is offered
for sale, by advertisement in the pa
pers of Washington city. Its original
cost was $2,000.
The leadiug merchants and slavo
t raders of Cuba are seeking an order
from the Spanish Government to stop
the slave trade, and permit African
colonization on that Island. They
wish to bring in three thousand at
once.
A spontaneous waterspout was no
ticed at Cheshire, Mass., the other day.
It consisted of six distinct streams,
ranging in height from tea to thirty
feet, which seemed to burst from the
earth like water from hot pipes.
One of tbe most valuable literary
collections in the world—the library
of the great, Hamboldt—was recently
burned in London, where it was on
storage in the rooms of an auctioneer.
During the war a number of insane
men were enlisted as seamen in the
United States service, their bounties
secured by sharpers, and themselves
left without anything. Tbe most pro
lific source of supply was from Canada.
Miss Eliza Sheenan of Saratoga,
has bought an undivided part of Con
gress spring, in that place for two
hundred and ten thousand dollars.
A shark of the man-eater species,
twelve (eet lung, weighing 1,300
pounds, and measuriug seven feet
»round the thickest part of the body,
was caught off Portland Harbor a few
days ago.
A large number of^Mississippians
of the $20,000 class, who were recom
mended by Gov. Sharkey, received
pardons from the President on the
14th instant.
An institute is to be built at Ilights
town, N. J., under the patronage of
the Baptists of New Jersey. It is to
be called the New Jersey Classical and
Scientific Institute, and is to cost
$ß0,000. A lot of eight acres has
been purchased in the most desirable
part of the town.
The American Watch Company
have purchased some forty acres of
land at West end, Hudson City, N. J.
near the New Jersey railroad track,
where they propose erecting a largo
manufactory and sixty cottages, as
residences for their employees.
General Payne, late of Paducah
notoriety, has created a sensation
among river men by the invention of
a new propelling power, which does
away with the use of boilers, and
causes an immense reduction in tha
expense of fuel. It is said that W. R
Arthur, has offered $100,000 for one
tenth interest in the patent with a
view to bring it into use on the Illi
nois Central railroad.
Mr. John Morrissey is now the
leading man at Saratoga. He is the
active manager and participator in
the profits of the new race-track lately
opened there, and it is said will have
an interest in the new United States
Hotel, now building. Besides this,
he controls five heavy faro and roul
ette banking-houses at the Springs,
all of which do a large business.
The telegraph wires between Spring
field and Boston were seriously affec
ted by the aurora borealis, on Thurs
day, and messages were transmitted
during the afternoon by natural elec
tricity wholly, no batteries being used.
At Hartford, Wednesday night, tha
aurora was so vivid as to enable per
sons to see the time of night on the
church clocks, after tha moon b#d
gone down.
