The number of persons in regular and
temporary Government employ at Wash
ington is stated to be five thousand.
The New York Tinu*' City of Mexico cor
respondence says the imperial feasts have
been of the most gorgeous description, and
the display of diamonds of fabulous prie»
was redundant.
The Bishops of tho Methodist Chnrcli
South assembled at Columbus, Ga., decid
ed to continue organization and have stated
their reason» therefor in a pastoral ad
dress.
Father Taylor, the Bailor preacher, long
one of the notabilities of Boston, ,died in
Brooklyn, Now York, on Monday, 24th
ult,, aired <14 years. He was a schoolmate
of W di . Wirt, and the oldest chaplain in
the navy.
Parson Brownlow concludes a letter
datod Nashville, Aug 12, to his paper at
Knoxville, with the following statement:
1 am now overhauling the pctiUous of
rebels to the Presidentfor pardon. Their
n antes are legions, and on each I havo to
make a report. Many of the cases are such
es ought roally to hang.
Major Geri. Cnstar lias issued an order
at Alexandria, La., ordering under arrest
iour Captains, twelve lieutenant* and sev
enty-flvo sergeants and corporals of the 2d
Wisconsin cavalry, for having endeavored
to force tho resignation of Lieut. Col. Dale
of that regiment, by declaring their un
willingness to serve under him, after he
had been restored to his command by a
court martial.
Tho statue of .Jefferson, executed in mar
ble by the late Virginia artist, Alexander
Gait, of Norfork, now lies in the Universi
ty of Virginia, boxed up,, just, as it earn*
from Europe.
A committee has been formed in Cincin
nati to erect a monument to Major Gen.
Mcpherson, who fell daring tho siege of
Atlanta.

Dates from Kingston,,lamaica, to the 7th
Auk ., are received. The Governor was the
subject of much abuse by tho newspapers
on tho island, for various offences which he
had given. Among other things, he waa
severely blamed for having allowed the
ex tfueen Emma, of the Sandwich Islands,
to pass though Kingston, on her way to
England, without any official recognition.
They claim that a new city has been dis
covered in Mexioo, all buried up and sonic
in a tangle of swampy forest, from which
no ono who went in ever came out again.
New York city crowds its population of
about a million into 55,000 houses. Phil
adelphia with lees than 700,000 people has
100,000 houses.
It IB estimated by old policemen of Rich
mond, Va., that not less than 20#0 colored
prostitutes have taken to street-walking
since the oocupation of that city by the
Uniui ^orces. Thcso poor wretches were
once Rspectable house servants, but with
freoJom came licentiousness, ana they now
fill the streets at night, polluting the air
with the vilest language.

One lady on tho grand stand at the Sar
atoga races, told a newspaper correspond
ent that she had $28,000 worth of diamond»
in her hair, that she felt perfectly "safe,"
as no pickpockets wore within the gatoa,
and her husband had put a policemen be
hind her with nothing elso to do then to
see that lier diamond head suffered no vio
lation.
An iron-clad gunboat called the Tarn
end are has been built at Rio Janeiro for the
Brazilian Government. The Emperor waa

A Saratoga letter, speaking of the ma
chinery for making up a fashionabio wo

a lonjf Interview with John Bell. He ia ten
years older in appoarauce than when the
war began. His hair and whiskers are
very gray, and he is very much stooped,
and leans upon his staff' as an old man ia
expected to do. I treat him very kindly.
He talks very freely about the rebellion,
and in opposition to it. Ho says the se
cessionist« in the South are all lunatics
without any locid Intervals— that ia to say,
