Sherman—he was not General then—was principal of the Mili tary Academy at Alexandria, Louisiana. In January of 1861, being still hi oharge of the institution, he addressed the follow ing letter to Governor Thomas O. Moore, at that time the Chief Executive of the State. Moore : S ir —As I occupy a quasi military posi tion under the laws of this State I deem it proper to acquaint you that I accepted such poflition when Louisiana va# a State in the Union, and when tho motto of this seminary was inscribed in maiblo over the main door, "By the liberality of the Gen eral Government. The Union, esto per pétua." Recent events forshadow a great change and it becomes all men to choose. If Louisiana withdraws from the Federal Union, 1 prefer to maintain my allegiance to the old Constitution as long as a frag ment of it survives, and my longer stay there would be a wrong in every sense of he word. In that event, I beg you will send or ap point some authorized agent to take charg» of the arms aud munitions of war belong ing to the State or advise me what dispo sition should be made of them. And furthermore, as President of tha Board of Supervisors, I beg you to take immediate steps to relieve mo as Superin tendent the moment the State determines to secede, for on no earthly account will do any act or think any thought hostile to or in defiance of tho old Government of the United States.
