WktëiMttt&ëmti n A T O N ROIIOU SATURDAY, ::::!û:::S::::8BPT. 16. 1866. rain, H »inoth overy day." The consequences is, miry etreet«, bad traveling, indulged in a» little m powibla, dull limon for trade, and a dornpish look and feeling among our buainesa c I bmos generally. C am.ki» M kmtino .— There will be a «alled meeting of ttao brethren of St. • .Urnen' Masonic Lodge, No. 47, at their ball, corner of Main and Churoh streets, this (Saturday) evening, September Iflth, at the usual hour. Reo notice of J oseph M o C okmiok , Sooretary, elsewhere. A COLORED ORGANIZATION. The colored population of West Baton flnuge have banded together on principles of mutual protection am! benefit, giving the go-by, very properly, to political clap trap and humbug, if wo arc permitted to judge from a circular of their'« just iseued, which has been placed into our hands, and to which we jfivo publicity below. The organization already numbers, we are told, somo 2,100 members. If it can preserve itself free from the contaminating in finances of low white men, whose secret motives and ambition are to entrap the poor blacks by soft-sawdering and intrigue, into money getting schemes, for self-ag. graniiixement, it win be acting both wisely ami well, ami be enabled to accomplish great good for its members and to enlist the aid and sympathies of respectable whites who really wish well to the colored folks and giucerely desire to see them suc ceed in their efforts at amelioration. We caution the blacks against the wiles of those unworthy "pale faces" who talk to them in honied phrases and sing to thorn in syren strains by way of lulling them into unsuspecting moods for the purpose of fleecing them afterwards. By listening to such falso-hearted propagandists, they will be led unwittingly into troubles and lie left to their fate by that very class, whose policy it ia to filch and flatter. We liavH heard of two instances (and doubtless there i* a multitude of theiu.) wherein the colored people of this city have been mado the dupes of swindling devices on the part of designing whites to rob them of money they had contributed for certain purposes of mutual benefit. Our colored friends should be constantly on their guard against those wolves in sheep's clothing—thoBe false teachers of false doctrines, whose ultimate aim is to fill their pockets at the expense of the poor darkey. As a rule, we are pleased to state what lias long been acknowledged, that the col ored people iu our vicinity are well-dispos ed and law-abiding. Exceptional cases, it iR true, are to be found, but where is there a white population in which the same ex ceptions are not to be met with? The colored soldiers also, manifest a degree of cnmiueudable deportment, which coupled with their generally neat appearance and their excellent army discipline, reflect much credit upon themselves and their officers. "Honor to whom honor is due !" The N. 0. Ilee, in the course of its re view of the late excellent address of Dr. F rench , of the Freedineu's Bureau in Uoorgia, to the freedmen collected at Al bany in that State, closes its remarks with the following paragraph which we adopt, as uuited to the object which we had in view when setting out to pen this tytiole: •'The great thing for the blacks at pres ent, is to be imbued with just sentiments of moral and legal obligation. Whatever they are to be in the political or social scale hereafter, depends upon their pro ficiency in learning this indispensable les iion. Their true friends, who are true friends of the country, couoede that this loHson cannot be learned in a day, and it is only the fanatical, incendiary, and re volutionary who would take the pupils from the preparatory tuition and force them at once through a spurious and pre posterous graduation." We revert now to the National Union Colored Society of West Baton Rouge, whose Circular we copy entire: iHnlional Union rotor«'«! Norlrly. (Unjanicf d in West Baton, fioug«, ,/une 6th, 1866) \ »Society called the "National Union (Ool'd) Society," has been organized among the people of color in the Parish of West listen Rouge, withlÜLViNoros V. Injure 11 was my intention to have visited you to-day, but circumstances have prevented me from doing so. 1 wanted to rceot you on the place yon live upon, and to talk to yon. I wanted to give you some good advice. I want, to show yon the importanoo of being truthful and honest, and industrious. Yon are all freed by the United States Government, and you must all now realize the im portance of labor; by the sweat of your brow you must, all earn your broad. You have nothing but your hands—-those yon must nse. Your former masters and own ers own the land you live on, and they have rights as sacred as yours. By ono act of the Government, yonr freedom has been given you; you were onoe worth money to them; you conuot be bought and sold now. Think how much has been taken away from them, and how much has been giveu to you; you are free as I am, and as those who once owned yon, and as any poor or rich people are In this grout, free country; but yon are not free to bo idle; not free to be lazy; not free to roum about; not free to live on a place end do as you ploase; not free to be dishonest and vicious; not free to bo impudent and ill mannered. If you llvo with Col. Ijogare, you will conform to his requirements—and obey all lawful orders given on hi# place. You cannot live anywhere without doing this— he must, be the head of his place. No place, no plantation, no store, no mill, no farm or shop is good for anything without a bead. Thoro must be discipline, tbore must, be order, tbero must bo law, and you must acknowlodgo it. If yon all go on and keep your contract all will be well. If you violate it. ml will be wrong with you. Tho government will protect Col. Logsro just as surely as it does yon—and if the Colonel complains before a Provost Mor shal of any of you, you will have to ap poar before the Provost Marshal and an swer to tho charge, and if found guilty you will bo punished. Tho pluoos of pun ishment and the modetf of punishment proscribed for yon arc just the same as those prescribed for him or for me, and for all people. .Inils and prisons, and guard honsoa, and hard labor with a ball and chain and poor diet, are tho modes. I re peat, if you do light, you have nothing to fear; if you do not you have ovorything to fear. You will be torn from your plenty, from your home and be mado to suffer. Trv to hoed what I say to you. The Colonel must keep his contract aud so must you. N. G. P ark kr, Act. Provost. Marshal. To the C'i/oreil l'eople of Aiken and I V einit/y:- Kineo my arrival here, I liavo seen loo much idleness and vagrancy. I cau tion yon to guard against it. If you are glad that, you are free, stay at home and be industrious. If you want to be re spected and have friends, keep out of idle ness and remain at home. If you have not good homes, be patient—get hetter ones when yon can, but don't break loose from those you have until you can see bet ter «nos. A poor bouse is better than none. If yon have hopes for tho futuro, and faith in the Government which has 1 reed yon, be industrious, work—work with a will auch as you never knew before. Freedom should inspire you with hopo, with courage, with enorgy, with patience, und unless it is done, there is a dark pros pect boforo you. Wako up, then, and look the future boldly in the foee; hear and hoed tho ud vice of your friends: turn awny from bad counsel an you would from a venomous snake. There are bad coun sellors among yon, men who, having a lit tle knowlodge, deceive themselves arid you. Never in tho world was there a people needing the sympathy of those around them, as you need it. now; and, unless by yonr conduct you make friends, you have no future but suffering. Somo of you are going about with words of hate for those whom you should by every act conciliate. You are free—but you little understand the use of freedom; you have yet to learn the value ami the dignity of it; you must learn to creep before you can walk. Un less youcompreboDd the importance of the blossing which has boon bestowed upon you, it will be a curse. You are free—but yon are not to be in solent. You uro not free t,o ba roaming about from place to place, neglecting your families, and living by begging or steal ing, for both aro crimes. Be honest, be truthful, be polite—bo all which the law of the land and tho law of God require of you, und you will have frlonds, and he s great people in time. Be, as many of you are now, and your bod teachers would make you, and you will disappoint your few friends aud please your euemies, and your end will be netter. Many of you are now violating yonr contract, or ugruemerit, with thofci with whom you have made them. I warn you of the danger you ara in. Many of you refuse to make any contract at all, and you are a* guilty as those who make them and violato them, because yon have beon di rected to do so. The same Government protects you that does me, and the same Government protects your formor master» and mistresMis Iba# does us, and their rights are as sacred as yours, and when you encroach upon theni you know not what you do—there is a prayer for you, but it can hardly save you if you sin against every light. "Lord forgive them, they know not what they do," will hardly be offered up in earnest for you if you persist in the wrong continually. You are troe—but yon are poor; you don't own a siuglo acre of land, and you never will until you earn k. Your former masters and owners own all the lands aud houses—you are now dependent upon them for tho shelter whioh protects you from the sun, and whioh must protect you from the biting cold of the coming winter. Many : of you don't think of this. Yon are proud j and boastful, and lar.y, and independent. | All of these faults will bring you to suffer ing. Lot^c ahead—there is another year coming; you all want homes next year. Government won't compel your former owners to provide you with them. You are freo—but you are poor. You have nothing but your hands, and you must use them diligently and constantly or you will die. Freedom imposes a duty upon you which you little understand, but you must learn it. I tell you tho truth, and whethor you believe it now or not, you will sooner or later believe it. 1 could tickle you if like nome of your own foolish ones, and make you believe a more palatable dose, and you would Hook around mo, and call mo your friend; but I cannot deceive you. You are tree, but you bave a life of labor kofore you—a life of toil and suffering; but it will be a rich life, if you accopt the toil as a blessing, which it really is, and riot a curse; and all that remains for you to do Is to work—pray, learn and wait—and all i will be well.
