(From th« Nïtdha* ( Misa .) Courier. A n officer of the late Confederate army, died a prisoner at Camp Chase, being en gaged at the time of his death to a South ern lady. A letter came to his address a few hours only after his doath, announc ing her faithlessness to hor engagement, which was aöswared by a friend of the deceased soldier, (Col. H., a fellow -pris oner,) in the following scathing lines, to wit: Your letter came, but- cam« too late. For Heaven had claimed it« own ; Ah! Huddcn change** from prison bars, Onto th« great white throne ; And yet, I think he would hare stayed For one more day of pain, Could ha have read M ima tardy word«, Which you have mini in vain. Why did yon wait, fair lady, through So many a weary hour? Had you other lovers with you in 'i'hat silken daily bower? Did others bow betöre your eharmN And twine bright «arlatid» th«r,.. And yet I ween in all that throng, Uta spirit had no fear. I wish that you were by roe now. As I draw the sheet aside, To nee how pure the look be wore, Awhile before he died; Vet the sorrow that you gave him still, Has left its weary trace. And a meek and xaintly sadness dwellt Upon that pallid face. "Her love," he said, "would change for me, The winter's cold to spring Ah! trust of thoughtless maiden's love! Thou art a bitter thing, Kor when these vales in May onee more, With fragrant blooms shall wave, The northern violetn shall blow, Above bis bumble grave. Tour (|ole of scanty words had been But one store pang to bear, Though to the last be kissed with lore, This tress of your soft hair— f did not put it where he said, {'or when the angels come, t would not have them find the sign, Of falsehood in his tomb. f've read your letters, and I know The wiles that you nave wrought, To win that noble heart of his, And gained It, fearful thought! What lavish wealth uten sometimes give, For a trifle, light and small, What manly form» are often held In folly's tlimsy thrall. You shall not pity him, for now He's past your hope and fear, Altho' i wish that you could stand With me beside bis bier ; Still t forgive you—Heaven knows, For mercy you'll have need, Hince God Dis awful judgment sends On each unworthy deed. To. night the cold whistles by As I my vigils keep, Within the prison dead house, where Few mourners come to weep. A rude plank coffin holds him now. Yet duath gives always grace, And I had rather see him thus, Than clasped in your embrace. To-night your rooms are very gay, With wit, and wine ana song. And you're smiling just as if ïou never dUl a wrong; Your hand so ntir, th«t none would thiol. It penned these words of pain, Your skin so white—would God your soul Wer» half s» free of staia. I'd rather b" this dear, dear friend, Than you in all your glee, For yon are held in grievous bonds, While, he's forever free. Whohi fierve we in this life, we serve In that which is to come, He chose his way—you >ours, let God Pronounce the fitting doom. Strategy .—A young lady was addressed by a youog man who, though agreeable to her ; was disliked by her father. Of course he could not consent to the Union and she deter mined to elope. The night was fixed, the hour came, he placed the ladder to the window, and in a few minutes she was in his arms. They mounted a double horse, and were soon some distance Irom the house. After a while the lady broke the silence by saying. "Well you see what a proof 1 have given you of my affection ; I hope you will make me a good hus band." He was a surly fellow and gruffly answered : "perhaps I may and perhaps not." She made no re ply, but after a silence of some min utes she suddenly exclaimed. "Oh what shall I do ; 1 left my money be hind me in my room." "Then," said he, "we must go back and fetch it." They were soon again at the house, and the ladder remounted, while the ill-natured lover waited below. But she delayed to come, and he goutly called : "Are you coming ?" she looked out the window and said "Per haps I may and perhups not;" then shut down the window and left him to return upon the doubla horse alone. Was not that a happy thought on the lady's part—a famous joke. Hon. Jamks G.
