It is thought that bj th« 1st of Oct. the II. II between Charleston and Columbia, S. C., will be com pleted. We observe that there i* to be a hotel built at 1'ull Jlun. The New York Mercury says that "heretofore it lias't been much of a place to stop at." A Richmond correspondent of the Ilertiid states that a large party of Swedes have arrived there en route to settle in the valley of the upper James river. It is said that the Empress Eugenie is about'to publish a volume of origin al poems, written in Spanish. Mr Guinness, the great Dublin Brewer,, has been knighted, and his beer bottle will henceforth bear the title of Sir Benjamin. Gen. Kiag, commanding at Augus ta,' ( Ja , has issued an order declaring al! contracts where the agreement wan to pay in gold, void. A correspondent states that Major (Jeneral Hooker is to be married in a few days to Miss Groesbeck, of Cin nati, sinter of .J udge W. L. Groesbeck, ex-member of Congress. Miss Groes beck enjoys an income of $40,000 per annum. Rev. Gilbert Haven, for several years pastor of the North Russel street Methodist Church, Boston, haB receiv ed a call to preside over one of the leadiag Methodist churches in Vioks burg. At the State Fair at Chioago, Gen. Grant's war horse sold for $475. The receipts of internal revenue during the week ending on the llth were $13,000,000. At a meeting on the llth in Spring field, Illinois Gen. McClernand presid ed at a moeting called to endorse the action of President Johnson in buh taining Gov. Sharkey. The opinion is confidently enter tained in many quarters that something approaching a general amnesty will be ploclaimed toward the late rebels of i lie South, long before the meeting of the next Congress, and that the public need not be surprised at its promulgation any day. It is expec ted to be made applicable to people of particular States at different times. The editor of a French paper, in speaking of the dedication of a new cemetery near Lyons, says that "M. Gascoigne had the pleasure of being the first individual who was buried in this delightful retreat." Large fields of cotton are growing in California, over one hundred acres in one field looking well. The State of California offers a bounty of $3000 for the first one hundred acres of cot ton ; also $3000 for the first one hun dred bales of three hundred pounds each. Over $100,000 is given by by the State for the encouragement of agriculture in the raising of various producta. • ♦ • — F orgot the K ey. —A high, although unintentional joke was played on the managers of the railway train that ran out of Cleveland the other morning. Soon after the train left Wheaton, a German woman was seen running out of a house with a colored handkerchief on a broomstick, making a very ener getic signal to the engineer to stop. The engineer supposing some serious danger was ahead, although going at a furious rate, quickly brought the train to a dead stop. The excited wo man then rushed up to a window of one of the cars, and calling to "The resa," her daughter, coolly handed in to her a door key, which it seems, that the young lady, on going to the depot at Wheaton to take the train, had for gotten to take with her ! The vexa tion and mortification of the officers and the merriment of the passengers can be imagined. jfâgr Sensations having nearly given out, one New York paper devotes a column or two to organ grinders, their habits and their occupaiion. It appears that a good hand organ costs about eighty dollars, but inferior in struments can bo bought for from thirty to sixty dollars. It is said of one of the lights of the profession that "Ferruroi ^rew very fat in his latter days, and very drunken also. Ha died in William street, surrounded with monkeys, who were very glad to get rid of him."
