B. was fond of his bottle and its contents. In other words, he put out of sight all the whisky that he could lay his hands on. One night, when acting as brigadier officer of the day, he vistod the pickets and found that one of the men did not salute him with as much military display as the Colonel desired, so he thought he would teach the man proper respect. The Colonel dismounted. "Give me your gun," he said. ''Mount my horse and ride off a little way, and, then approach me as though you were visiting the pickets." The soldier did as he was directed. The first thing he looked for was his canteen of whisky. It was empty. Hardly had ha recovered his astonishment, when he heard snor ing ; proceeding to the bed, he saw the soldier whom he relieved at bis post. " HaHo V roared the Colonel, "who in the devil's name are you ?" "Colonel B," was the answer, as the sleeping soldier roused up. " You scoundrel !" cried the Colon el, " you aie drunk on my whisky."
