The Shaking of the Kations.
sermo.v nr Trie bf.v. t>r marshal!., of M ississippi,
AT THW COOPÄR msriTOTB.
A sermon on "The Shaking of the Na
tions" wan preached by an ex-rebel chap
lain— ßev. Ur. Marshall, of Mississippi—
in the basement hall of the Cooper Insti
tute yesterday morning. The audience
was very respectable, both in numbers and
appearance. After singing and praying,
during which latter exercise the reverend
gentleman besought the Almighty to bless
the President and guard him from the
counsels of cruel and bloodthirsty men,
distinguished prisoners—political prison
ers—were also specially commended to ths
care of the Almighty.
For hi» text Dr. Marshall chose tlio fol
lowing passage of Holy Writ:—"1 will
»hake the nations, and the desire of all na
tion# shall come, and I will fill this house
with the glory of the Lord of Hosts."
Time, he said, would fail, were he to at
tempt to show forth the full moaning and
richness of the text, foreshadowing as it
did tho coming of the Lord Jesus Christ,
by whom the nations of the world would
be shaken, and the utmost he could hope
to accomplish was to furnish his audience
■with a skeleton which tliey must cover
with flesh and muscles. As an introduc
tion to tho principal part of his discourse
he laid before them what he under ton.I to
bo tho Divin# method in the government
of tho kingdoms of the world preparatory
to the coming of Jesus Christ. He then
proceeded to explain the reason why na
tions wcro shaken, one ressort being that
they got too big—not too great, but too
big—by which he meant to say they ac
quired a bullying, overbearing disposition,
and went about the world singing "Rule
Britannia" or some other similar ditty of
self-laudation. Then they were shaken
by God, and fell to pieces for the good of
mankind.
It was not by any means a question of
territory, but it was the absence oj a spirit
of brotherly love and kindness, which
caused nations to be shaken and fall to
pieces. By the spirit of brotherly love he
meant that spirit which lireathed in the
late speech of Lloyd Garrison oh the im
prisonment of Jeti'ersou Davis, and tor
which he (thospeaker)had learned to love
Garrison, as it showed that he had a heart
as big as the universe, and that it was
filled with thoughts of fraternal love and
friendship for all mankind. (Great sensa
tion among tho audience; smothered ap
plause and hisses). The same spirit which
oreuthod in that speech would do much to
establish a feeling of brotherly love and
kindness over the length and breadth of
the land. He then bitterly denounced all
attempts tending to establish a sectional
religious feeling between the North and
South, and predicted that fearful results
would ensue from all such attempted re
ligiouB intolerance, lie earnestly desired
that th« Northern people could listen to
the teachings and preaching of Southern
clergymen. From their pulpits not a word
was spoken on political subjects from year's
end to year's end. The language of the
Southern people was very different from
that of the bulls and bears of the Northern
pulpits, who say to the South "For your
sins God has deserted you, and you have
been soundly thrashed;" butin the South
where they have buried their son* a«d their
fathers, where their houses are burned and
their fields laid waste, the people still look
up to God and acknowledge that it was
good for them to be afflicted, and that in
mercy, not in wrath, had they been chas
tened by the hand of the Almighty. That
was the spirit in which they wished to be
received by their brethren of the North.
They believed implicitly that whom the
Lord loveth he chasteneth. Why could it
not be understood that if a people, after
having fought chivalrously for four years,
could now, on being beaten, submit mag
nanimously ? (Great sensation).
He believed that this shaking of the na
tion had tended to give each individual a
clearer and better knowledge of tho char
acter and lore of God. But not alone were
nations thus shaken to accomplish tho will
of God in proparing the world for the
conning of the Lord. Individuals, fami
lies and cities were at times shaken. After
mentioning several instances where an un
timely and awful calamity had overtaken
both individuals and cities, he said that
even the great city of New York would be
shaken by God if it stood in the way of
tho Lord Jesus, and some individual would
in the remote futurn look down with a
shudder of disgust at the adders and other
poisonous reptiles gathered around tho
ruins of the Croton aqueduct, and, as he
stood there, ho wopld meditate on the
cause of the downfall of the uiighty city.
All these shakings of individuals, families,
cities and nations were, however, but pre
paratory to that time spoken of in the text
when "this house shall be filled with tho
glory of the Lord of Hosts." This—the
concluding head of the discourso—was elo
quently and briefly discussed, after which
he announec.il that a collection would be
taken up to defray the expense of hiring
the hall, and tho surplus would be added
to the fund ho was raisirig for the purpose
of sending to their homes the disabled sol
diers of Leo's late command, many of
whom are now scattered all ovor the coun
try. Ho spoke in high terms of the gen
erosity of the merchants of New fork, for
the liberality they had displayed toward
him since his arrival in this city.
