An ex-army sutler, who resides in Indianapolis, made $200,000 in four teen months, whieh he invested in United States bonds, thus escaping taxation ! The London Times says that the Thames tunnel is "but the shadow of a shadow" in comparison with the great Lake tunnel in progress at Chic ago for the supply of the oity with pure water. The construction sf the latter is carried on rapidly. The Chic ago Republican says of it : It now ex tends into the lake a distance of 3 t * 890 feet, and each day shows a fur ther advance of from eleven to seven teen feet. While General Grant was en route from Springfield to St. Louis, a crowd pressed eagerly around the train while it was stopping at Alton. There are in existenoe no less than forty-two hundred and fify-seven oil companies, with a total capital of eight hundred and sixty-three million fivo hundred and ninety-four thousand dol lars. Mr. E. J. Lowe, the well-known English meteorologist, relates the un expected appearance of two small comets. They were discovered while watching for the appearance of Bicla'» comet. The proprietors of the Fifth Avepue Hotel in New York don't charge the prices they do without an objeot. Their profits in twelve mouths have amounted to one hundred and seventy five thousand dollars. The present Dublin Internationa! Exhibition does not " pay," and it is feared that the guarantors will be call ed upon to make up deficiencies. A small freehold estate of about two hundred and forty-four acres in the parish of Mertoo, Surrey, about ten miles from London, was lately sold for the extraordinary high price of £60,000, being at the rate of nearly £250 per acre. The Canadian authorities have only restored $90,000 to the funds stolen trom the St. Albans banks by the reb el Canadian raiders. It is stated Government has made a peremptory demand for the remainder, $120,000.
