McOormack, the inventor of the famous reaping machines now tfenepilly used in the western prairies, and by which he made an immense fortune, died lately in the Illinois State Lunatic Asylum. He was a native of Virginia, and was one of the most enterprising of the citizens of Chicago. A fellow made his appearance in MeridoB, Connecticut, on Thursday, with a large, live rattlesnake, some five feet ten inches long, which he had captured on West Mouutain. He went round holding it in his hands, trying to sell it, and finally obtained $3 for it. Omar Pasha, the famotis Turkish general has been lately at Vienna, and it is reported that he will soon be or dered to operate against the Monten egrins, who are again threatening to give trouble to the Moslems. A prospectus has been issued in London of the National Horse Insu rance Company, with a capital of .£50,000, in shares of £5, for the pur pose of effecting insurance on horses in the event of death or accident. T rouble at P aducah, K y.— Fight Between the White and Black /Sol diers —The Louisville Evening News of the 5th instant has the following : At Paducah, a few days ago, as an Illinois and Minnesota regiment were being relieved of duty as Provost guards of that place by a negro regi. meut, the white soldiers concluded that they had been outraged by the presence of negro soldiers, and they took the matter into their own hands, and concluded to wreak their revenge upon the blacks with stoues and revol vers. The negroes attempted to re sist, but this only increased the fury of the white soldiers, and before all the negroes could be collected and taken inside the fortifications of Fort Ander son, six or seven of them were killed. The negroes were only saved by being collected within the fort, and a white guard placed around them, when the excitement died out, and the white soldiers were sent out of town on their way home. O rigin of " F bniaïj ." —The origin of the term "Fenian" is thus described: The term Fenian is derived from the Gaelic word Fiann. In the anti quated Gaelic it is written Fiand. It was a name given to an order or class of professional soldiers among the Pa gan Irish, long before the Christian era. In ordinary times the Fiann consisted of three legion«; in each le gion were three hundred men, but in war there were usually sevea legions.
