To the Voters of East Baton Bouge*
F kllomn O itijcrp »»—At the aolici
cîtation of nuinnrouB friends I am in
ducod to present you my name a« a
""C/irididftto for your'suffrage at the en
suing election, to represent you in the
Htate Hcnate.
In taking this step, I ain not un
mindful of the weighty responsibili
ties and obligations attaching to the
position, should I be successful in
the canvaas, nor of the sacrifices
that I must necessarily make to serve
you faithfully.
While therefore I have hesitating
ly and with diffidence announced my
name as a candidate for the State
Senate in obedience to the wishes of
those whose preferences and judg
ment 1 could not disregard, 1 hope I
may not bo considered as presuming
to arrogate to myself qualifications
superior or even equal to many hun
dreds of my fellow-citizens for this
important station.
But such ate the evil times upon
which we have fallen; such is the »
impoverished and ruined condition
of our once happy and prosperous
»State, that it behooves every citizen
to come forward with alacrity and
act his full part in saving something
of the general wreck and replacing
his State in that proud position
which it formerly occupied.
Upon the next Legislature will
devolve the consideration of subjects
of the most vital importance to you.
Your destiny for weal or woe ; wbetli
er you shall be invested once more
with your civil rights and placed in
the path of independence and pros
perity, or sink down into wretched
poverty and anarchy, depend upon
the political, intellectual and moral
complexion of your next Legislature.
The measures that will come be
fore the next Legislature must bo so
many and various and so complex in
their natures, that it cannot be ex
pected that I shall discuss them in
this short address. And the time
between this and the day of election
is so brief that I can hardly do more
than visit a few neighborhoods and
families and make known my candi
dacy.
J trust however, fellow-citizens,
that two terms in our legislature as
Representative from the l arish of St.
Mary, before T came to reside among
you, and my residence in Baton
ltouge for the last twelve years, will
not have left you ignorant, of my con
servative political principles ; nor of
whatever qualifications I may pos
seas to represent you in a Legislative
capacity.
Should you see fit to honor me
with your suffrage, and elect me to
the State »Senate, I can only pledge
you my best abilities and undivided
attention and constant exertions to
secure the adoption of such measures
as will tend to elevate our State, pro
mote peace and good will, give Se
curity, restore law and order and de
velopo and foster the agricultural aùd
productive interests of the State.
Yours, respectfully,
KICHARD H. DAY.

A C ombustible M ud .—At a recent
meeting of the Asiatic Society of Ben
gal, Major Risely described a com
bustible mud of which he first heard
of last September. It exists in large
tracts, notably in the Pertabghur dis
tricts iu Oude, where there is a jheel
or swamp of black mud which looks
like aslies and smoulders like wood.
The mild, wheu dried, blazes quite
freely. It has been tried at Cawnpore
by Mr. Taylor, the locomotive lore
man, and was found to give nearly as
as much steam as wood. "It would
be well lor locomotives, and could be
supplied at six annas the maund."
When carried it can be used in a
blacksmith's furnac«. The ash, of
which it leaves a great deal, will
(they say) be very useful as a manure
for poor, sandy soils. Bits of bone
and fragments of decayed wood were
found in it at considerable depths.
The Calcutta analyzers call it impure
peat, resulting from the continued
decomposition of vegetable matter at
the bottom of the marsh. It is cu
rious that the natives, though well
aware of its proprieties, make no use
of it ; their reason beiug that it owes
it origin to "enormous sacrifices of
ghee and grain burnt m situ by god
like people in old time."
KWh. correspondent writing from
Sulphur Sprinps, Teno., says :
''While reclining under a tree T
was startled by the footsteps of a horse
and looking up saw the animal coming
towards me at full speed. He appear
ed to be terribly frightened, and com- j
menced running around the spot where
I was seated, and I soon discovered
that the animal was completely cov
ered with wasps, having, no doubt
trampled upon a nest of these insects.
The poor beast ran about in excrucia
ting torment for fully an hour and a
half, wheu he fell dead."
