ist How an Editor Died— His Cool ness and Courage —He makes a will amid the Howling of the Tempest— The Vessel goes to Pieces and he is Drowned —A San Francisco corres pondent furnishes this account of a re markable case of coolness and cour age. The gentleman alluded to was James Nisbet, of the San Francisco Bulletin who was lost on the steam ship Brother John^ihan, and his body was found floating in the ocean seven miles from land. When it was taken ashore and examined there was found ■ in the deceased's vest pocket a will, which was written after the veesel struck the fatal rock. Contemplating calmly the terrible scenes about him, and calculating his chances for life, he had the cool courage to make su. h a disposition of his property as woul.l be most beneficial to those who would be left behind him. That old man writing a will amid the howling ofthe tmnpest that was lashing the ocean into foaming billows, and surrounded by drowning men, women and chil dren, wailing out their agony to the pitiless winds and the raging sea, pre sents a heroic picture. Here is a copy of the will, and let the reader observe with what care it is written "A t B ia oh B oard the B bothkb J onathan, I July 20th, 1866. J In view of death, I hereby appoint my brother James Nisbet, at present engaged on the Pacific Railroad, near Clipper Gap, California, my sole ex ecutor, with instructions to wind up my whole estate, real and personal, and convert the same into cash, with all convenient speed, but so as not to sacrifice the saine, and to pay over and divide equally between himself and my •ole sister Margaret Nisbet, uow resi ding in England ; and under burden of the payment of a legacy of $5000 in gold to Almira Hopkins, wife of Casper T. Hopkins, insurance agent, San Francisco, California. And I desire that my brother, said Thomas Nisbet, shall not be asked to give se curity for his intromission with my es täte. Jas. Nisbet. The document was written with a pencil, the writer coolly recollecting that pencil marks are less affected by water than ink. It was clearly writ ten, in Mr. Nisbet's bold and steady penmanship. When he had concluded the will he found that he had a little time left before the ship would probably go down, and he ad ded the following brief note to a fam ily in this city where he had boarded for many years : "My Dear Ma—A thousand affec tionate adieus. You spoke of my sailing on Friday—hangman's day— and the unlucky Jonathan. Well, here I stand with death before me. My love to you all—to Casper, to Belle, Meilie, and little Myra—kiss her for me. Never forget G randpa." The children familiarly addressed the old man as grandpa, although he was in no way related to thorn. Grant and i Sherman— Mutual Opinions. —A letter wriiten by Gen. Grant in the spring of 1864, when be was about to be nude Lieut. General to Gen. Sherman, and the reply thereto, of the latter, have been made public. Gen. Grant with his chaacrteistic modesty, said that, for his success, he was indebted to many officer.-, but more especially to Gen. Sherman and McPherson, for whom he also express the warmest friendship. Oen. Sherman said, you do your self injustice, and us too much honor ; and proceeded in a most cordial and unaffected manner to declare his un bounded admiration for the character and abilities of Gen. Grant, and the happiness afforded by his friendship. My only point of doubt, said General Slierman, was in your knowledge of grand strategy, and of books, of sci ence and history, but I confess your common sense to bave supplied all of these. The Wrong Bier .—Tom Cooke tells a 6 tory of an occurrence at a pro vincial theatre in Ireland, where M& cready was personating Virginius. In preparing for the scene in which the body of Dentatu s is brought on the stage, the manager called to "Pat," bis property man, for the bier. Pat being of a "heavy" temperament, res ponded to the call, by saving he would fetch it "immaditly." Pat next made his appearance with a full foaming pot of the right sort, and was received with a thousand and one curses for his etuipd ty. "The bier you blockhead !" thundered the manager. "And isn't it here ?" exclaimed Pat, presenting the mug. "Not that you donkey— I mean the barrow for Dentatus." "Then why dont you call things by their right name ?" muttered Pat. "Who would suppose you infant the barrow when you called for beer?" In Cochin China they harness bulls to chariots and run races with them. Singular coachin'. FURNITURE!
