Mosquitoes hitherto almost un
known in England, have prevailed at
some of the seaports tbia summer.
Gov. Lewis, of Wisconsin, has com*
plained to the War Department of
abuses and harsh treatment bestowed
upon troops of his State by Gen. Cus
tar, and asking for their muster oat of
service.
Some of Secretary Seward's friends
admit that he did notify the British
Government of the Fenian movement
in this country, and justify it on the
ground that England gave as notice of
the St. Albans and other rebel raids
from Canada.
Paris with a population of 1,696,
141, possesses more than fifty,thou
sand acres of open ground, planted
with more than one millioa trees.
The Conference of the M. K.
Church, South, recently in session at
Nashville recommends that the word
South be stricken from the name of
their Church.
Official dispatches from Alabama,
are to the effect that Provisional Gov
ernor Parsons will be elected to the
United States Senate.

Orr, as Governor of the State under
the new constitution. Wade Hamp
ton and Porter are also elected.
Gen. Dick Taylor has vaioly at
tempted to ascertain, of the President
when Jeff. Davis' trial will take
place. It is however supposed that
it will come off at an early day.
English omnibuses have been es
tablished, which run from Jerusalem
and Bethlehem to the places in the
neighborhood.
A cake of gold weighing 1,312
ounces, the produce of 300 tons of
quartz, has been exhibited at Bendi
go, Australia.
The War Department has issued an
order discharging from arrest all per
sons failing to report under any draft.
It is estimated that 24,000 bales
of cotton will be procured tbis year,
along the line of Illinois Central Rail
road, against 5000 bales last year.
It is estimated that the cost of the
Wertz trial to the Government will
be upward 1,000,000. In one in
stance, the expense of providing a
single witness for the defence was $3,
100.
S hrevepobt .—The News of the
17th says :
There is still a considerable amount
of cotton coming. On yesterday the
reoeipts were very heavy. Trade is
still brisk.
The Gaiety Theater is open in
Shreveport, under the management
of Mr. W. E. Thomas. James Keith
& Co.'s Varieties Troupe are also ex
pected in a few days.
Middling cotton is selling in Shreve
sport at from 20 to 26 cents a pound
in gold.
A S light M istake .—A wag in a
country barroom, where each man was
relating the wonderful tricks they had
seen performed by Signor Blitz and
the rest of the conjuring family ex
pressed bis contempt for the whole 1
trade, declaring that he could perform
any of their tricks, especially that of
beating a watch in pices and restoring
it who!?.
It being doubted, he demanded a
trial. Several watches were at once
produced for the experiment.
" There," said he, " there are the
" Yes," all exclaimed, "now let's
see the watch."
He used mysterious words, shook
up the fragment, and at length put
down the pestle and mortar, observ
ing :
Well,/ thought I could do it, but
by George, I can't ! "
S ome days ago a sportsman in the
vicinity of Enreka, Illinois wounded a
white crane, and took it to town.
While examining it some of the citi
zens tantalized the bird until they got
it angry. Among the number was G.
W. Thompson, formerly of Rockport,
Indiana, and for several years clerk of
Parke county, While stooping down
to pluck at it, the crane made a sud
den peck at his face literally tearing
one of hia eyes from his head.
