IIATON BOlOKi TUKBDAY,.::::::::::.::::::::OOT. 31, 1866. CdTTON S tkai.kbb. —A writer in the N.O. Times of the 25th, complains of the outrageous practice of cotton stealing crrried on by droves of negro pilferers on the levee, and calls the at tention of the Mayor thereto. The writer believes, from actual observa tion, that at least $10,000 worth of cotton is stolen every mouth on the levee. This nefarious business of cotton stealing finds its counterpart to some considerable extent in this region. Occasionally we have had to notice the mysterious disappearance of a bale of cotton without the owner's leave ; and for an offence of this kind perpetrated a few nights since in our city, the paioies implicated, consisting of three of the sable gentry^ were arrrsted by Constables Sanciifz and Pino , and taken before Justice Nephler . In de fault of $1000 bail each, they were sent to jail to await their trial at the next term of the District Court. Cotion stealing is by uo means con fined to to the embaled article while on storage or in transitu , but has been pretty extensively and succass fully practiced for some time past in some of the fields where it is grown both in this parish and in West Baton Rouge. The thieving is particularly rife daring moonlight nights, when the staple can be readily discerned and picked from the bolls. Such nights we are having now, and'it is to be hoped that the guilty rascals who are engaged in this business will be detected and brought to puuishmeut. Oliver A. Pierce haR been appointed Postmaster for the town of Plaquemine, Iberville Parish. Our thanks are renowedly tendered to the Receiving, Forwarding and Com mission House of F. L. Tebpinitz for late 8#. Louis papers. T ub H abnky H ocsb Publio attention is called to the advertieiomont of the pro prietors of this old and commodious es tablishment, the re-opening of which is fixed for Wednosday next. Every comfort and attention within the power of the proprietors is pledged by them to the patrons of their house. Raymond's Vabikty Stobb .—We are glad to see that our stirring and sterling young friend, Dav. Raymond , is succeed ing in his mercantile efforts to build up a business to meet the household wants of the community. His store on Third streot is becoming crowded with * melange ofnovel tios and accesbions understood and appre ciated by housekeepers, and from the way he has boon adding to his stock in trade of late, we conclude they aro not slow in manifesting their appreciation. We hope ho may continue to meet with steadily in creasing salos. Where Bre# is Cheap .—A Texas letter-writei^ays : "Any man in this Stale who does not own four hundred head of cattle and seventy or a hun dred horses and mules is worse than worthless. Beef sells here at five cents per pound, horses and mules from fifteen to thirty dollars for round lo's, and are within two hundred and fitl y miles of a good market. As far as the eyo can reach in every direction, and as far as you may go, the country is alive with stock. The whole mar ket of the United States might be supplied here, and there would not be any apparent decrease." » . ISP A native young man of Gal. veston, Mr. Jo. Labadie, is engaged in the manufacture of shot by a secret process, under which the "firm high towers of other days" are dispensed with, and all the varieties of shot, from mustard seed to swan, are turned off in in a style and at an expense which defies competition from outsido'barba rians. He is bagging upwards of 12, 000 pounds per day. At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the .National Conserva tive Union Party, held last evening, Mr. Chas. M. Olivier, of the parish of St. Martin, was nominated for the of fice of Auditor of Public Accounts, in place of Mr. V. A. Fournet, of the same parish, who has been constrained to decline the nomination on account of the pressure of private affairs.— True Delta, H th. There is an article constantly wanted, the materials of which requires comparatively little skill to produce and which ought never to be brought from a distance, with heavy cost of freight to and fro. It is oakum. Why does not some enterprising Al gerine open an oakum factory over the river to supply the heavy want of it among the shipbuilders and cnulk. ers! There are idle half hands enough around that place, and per sons who must eat, but are dependent upon charity or over-worked relatives, both on the other side and on this. Never let us be called upon to buy abroad what we can make at home, and make cheaper than it can be made whore the materials must be sent fruin here there to be manufac tured. —N. O Picayune. Grn Beauregard .—We under stand that Gen. Beauregard yesterday took charge as Superintendent of the Jackson railroad. We trust that this engagement will prove all that it promises. The railroad can scarcely fail to be greatly advantaged by it, and it is to be hoped that Gen Beau regard may have every reason to be satisfied with the position.— lb. G bn. L ouis JT srbkkt. —The Iberville Pioneer, of the 21st, says : We noticed the arrival of Gen. Louis Hebert a few days since. W« gi»e him a most cordial welcome. The General distinguished himself upon the bloody ti Id of Oak Hill, Pea Ridge, and many other battle fields. On all occasions the General was equal to the emergency, and his name will be associated with some of the most able strategetie moTements'of the army of Missouri ami Arkansas. He was in high favor during the whole war with his superior officers, aud universally loved by his subordinates. «ar"Going, Going, going !" said an auctioneer. "Where are you go ing ?" asked a large bearded oian in the room "I'm going to the Zoolo gical Gardens, to tell the keepers one of their baboons is loose," replied the knight of the hammer.
