T he S aturday P rrss .—This pa pur published weekly iu Now York, comes nearer to our idea of a truly humorous, witty and comic paper, and that without pretending to be merely such, than any one of the at tempts that have been made to make a funny paper in this country. It is conducted by Henry Clapp, who says more good things in a sin gle number thau the late M ra. Grundy said in her whole twelve. By the way, Clapp denies that he was ever on the old lady's staff. Who that read Mrs. 0. could have imagined such an absurd idea? We give a few clippings from the last 8. P. : A etc Form of Allegiance. —I here by solemnly subscribe to the Consti tution of the United States for life, and to the New York Sat urday Prang for one year—promising to renew my subscription to the latter as often /is called upon. Witness my hand and Seal " this of —— Green A. I)., Name, Address, Any person filling up the above form, enclosing the sum of three dol lars, and forwarding the same to this office, will give a proof of his loyalty and intelligence which will place him (in our opinion), in the first rank of American citizens. We learn on good authority that a new Irish society is about to be or ganised in this city, having the same object in view as the Fenians. It is to be called "The Independent Order of Hod Fellows." Every member is expected to be a brick. The insignia of the order, it is said, will be similar to the Masons. Thus Fur and No Father. —The City Council of Chicago have been on a visit to New York during tjie week to see our city fathers, but have found only a pack of city poli ticians. 9 The city having been cheated out of its census by Mr. Depew, is now being cheated out of its seuses by Mr. Herrmann. The Embassy from the Hey of Tunis has just made a visit to the Bay of New York, and very much regrets that the Bay of New York cannot pay a visit to the Bey of Tunis. OF" The Boston Transcript says there is now on exhibition at a jew eller's shop in that city a curious piece of sculpture, intended as "a present from a gentleman of London to a literary gentleman of Boston. The carving is on a piece of Heme's Oak, Celebrated by a well known passage in Hhakspeare. This famous oak, after having stood the blasts of many centuries, was prostrated by one of more than ordinary fury, vvhich swept through the forests of Windsor in 1853. Great has been the anxiety of thousands, since its destruction, to possess fragments of it, but few, who had not 'a friend at court,' could be gratified with even a small fragment. In this exquisite piété of sculpture Shakspeare is finely represented, as are also Herne the hunter, and his horse and hounds." ty The N. Y. Times —Republi can—denominates the Sumner school o^ Radicals "chronic malcontents," and says "there can be no doubt that the country is tired and dis gusted with the extreme and extrav agant style in which the claims of the negro have been pressed. By a very active and peremptory school of political and social reformers, the claims, interests, courage and char acter of the whites have been made wholly subordinate to those of the blacks. There must in the nature of things be a reaction to all this—and the Connecticut election indicates that it has begun. How far it will go, or what results it will accom plish, remains to be seen. It will probably, at all events, somewhat dampen the ardor of ambitious poli ticians who have supposed ultra de votion to the negro the only winning card, and it may possibly satisfy party leaders that it is not always safe rashly to insert new planks in a party platform." #*grThe Indian names which desig nate BO many of our naval vessels are the subject of many transformations by Jack. He calls the Wissahickon the "Widow Higpns the Miami the "Miasma and now the Mianton- j omab has been christened by the same | authority. "My aunt knows no-man," i and the Shockoekou the "Shocking, corn." ' FURNITURE! CABINET MAKING, T7NDERTAKINO, PARLOR, 0PPICË AND COOKING STOVES, OROOKHIE8, &u. JOHN L.
