O Dorm.fi T.—The Woods, of
Lancfisliire, England,' are a distin
guished family for character, wealth
and talent. The eldest aon, John
Wood, was for many yearn a mem
bor of Parliament for Preston. A
laughable circninstance once took
place upon a trial in Lancashire
whom the head of the family, Mr
Wood 1 , senior, was examined a?
• witness. Upon giving his nam»
(Ottiwell Wood), the Judge, address
ing him, said, "Pray, Mr. Wood
how do you spell your name?" The
old gentleman replied :
"U double T
I double U
E double L
Doulile U
Double 0 I) ; "
upon which the astonished lawyer
laid down his pen, saying it was th
most extraordinary name he had
ever met with in his life ; and, after
two or three attempts, declared that
he was unable to record it. The
Court was convulsed with laughter.
There arp some smart rascals
in Memphis, TertoHessee, who, when
they find a horse unmarked, rep
resent themselves as government
agents, and boldly claim the animal
as a horse that has been stoleu from
thu (government. If the owner Q of
the horse claims that there are no
" II. S." marks on the animal, the
rogues produce a glass, which they
declare is a magnifying one, and, as
the lens of the glass has faint "U.
K." lined upon it, the looking through
it makes the letters visible, appar
ently on the horse. This astounds
the owner of the beast, and with
cool audacity the thieves ride off
with the horse they have appro
priated.

If one should give me a dish of
sand, and tell me there were particleB
of iron in it, 1 might look for them
with my eyes, and search fur them
with ray clumsy fingers, and be una
ble to deteöt them ; but let me take
a magnet and sweep through it, and
how it would draw to itself the most
invisibla particles by the mere power
of attraction Î The unthankful heart,
like my finger in the sand, discovers
no mercies ; but let the thankful heart
sweep through the day, and as the
magnet finds the iron, so it will find
in every hour some heavenly blessing ;
only the iron in Cod's sand is gold.—
