BATON TUESDAY,.:::::::::::: ROVflK: ::::::::NOV. 7, 1865. G ood T emplabs . —Fidelity Lodge, No. 1, Independent Order of Good Templars, an organized institution in our city, has been pursuing in a quiet and unostentatious way its. efforts in the worthy mission of reclaiming the young and old from the paths of intemperance and snatching, as "burning brands from the fire" those within its reach who had been given over to the grasp of the alcoholic foe. This benevolent brotherhood has pros pered to a degree which renders it neces sary for its members to cast about in order to procure a suitable and permanent lodge hall, and to this end they solicit such do nations as all well-disposed persons have it in their power to make. A series of Eesolutions adopted by the members of Fidelity Lodge and submitted to the public, will be found in our columns, aetting forth the object in view, which we hope will meet the favor and encourage ment it deserves. » ♦ » A gentleman advertising in our columns to-day, desires to lease for one year or longer, about one hundred acres of good cotton land. For further particulars apply at this office. The Jury represents that the people on the shores of Lake Mauripas are now suffering as much as they did during the war, in conse quence of this blockade cf the naviga tion to and from the Lake. /> M r . S ocle .—We read in the New York News of the 20th October : The Hon. Pierre Soulé is at the New York ^otel. We are pleased to observe that after a sojourn in an un genial climate, this gallant and gifted gentleman is in the enjoyment of per fect health. We understand since that the ap {learanee of the above, Mr. Soulé has >een in Washington City. A gentle man just from that city, met him there. Mr. Soulé came to New York from Havana, where he was on the 14th October, and whither he had come from Vera Cruz. He will doubtless ' arrive in this city in a short time We presume he will have no serious difficulty in obtaining his property from the Feeedmen's Bureau.—N. O. Bee, 31st ult. A C lever C ase of C ut O ut. It is many years since I fell in love with Jane Jerusha Skeggs, the handsomest country girl by far that ever went on legs. By meadow, creek, and wood, and dell, so often we did walk, and the moonlight smiled on her melting lips, and the night winds learned our talk. Jane Jerusha was all to me, for my heart was young and true, and loved with a double and twisted love, and a love that was honest too. I roamed all over the neighbors' farms, and robbed the wildwood bowers, and tore my trousers and scratched my hands in search of choicest flowers In my joyous love I brought all these to my Jerusha Jane ; but I wouldn't be so foolish now, if I were a boy again. A city chap then came along, all dressed up in fine clothes, with a shiny vest and a moustache under his nose. He talked to her of sing ing-8chools (for her father owned a farm), and she left me, the country love, and took the new chap's arm And all that night I never slept, nor could I eat next day, for I loved that girl with fervent love that nought could drive away. I strove to win her back to me, but it was all in vain ; the city chap with the hairy lip married Jerusha Jane. And my poor heart was sick and sore until the thought struck me, that just as good fish still remained as ever was caught in the sea. So I went to the Methodist church one night, and saw a dark brown curl peeping from under a gipsy hat, and I married that very girl. And many yearB have passed and gone, and I think my loss my gain ; and I often bless that hairy chap that stole Jerusha Jane. Sir Morton Peto, the leading person in the English delegation of capitalists who lately came through the Northern and Western cities, and over their railroads, is a self-made man. He began life as a carpenter, at 60 cents a day. Now he owns a splendid estate near Norfolk, and is one of the largest English contractors for build ing railroads, in England and on the continent, and other foreign countries. A cow at Mt. Carbon, Pa., burglariously entered a flour and feed store, and ate halt a Darrel of flour. She then went off and drank a lot of water, whereupon the flour "riz" and the cow went dead. gjg- In the forthcoming Church Congress at Norwich, Eng., there will at all events be one novelty. "It has been determined by those interested in the spread of knowledge of Chris tian art," so runs the announce ment, "to hold at Norwich, during the Congress week in October next, an ex hibition of articles both ancient and modern of general Church interest, such as copes, chasubles, dalmatics, tunicles, altar cloth?, banners, archi tectural designs, chalices, patens, cen sers, paintings, engravings, and church furniture generally." It is added that when real things cannot be sent by ex hibitors, models or photographs will answer the pnrpose. Never keep coffee long in a tin coffee pot, as the vessel will impart its flavor to the fluid—or rather the fluid will abstract it. Keep coffee where it will not im bibe odor, for it takes it on readily. Whole cargoes are sometimes lost by the presence of allspice or rum. NEW ORLEANS MARKETS. FINANCIAL.
