They can di pond on getting good article* from him <» the most accommodating cash terms, an\ receiving the politest treatment both in > personal and business way. M ajor G eneral J ohn C. B reckin-' ridcik .—We see it stated that the . i- . l. v. wbole of Jeif Davis's Cabinet bas been pardoned. Is that tha fact ? If it is, is not John C.Breckiiiridge, who was iu the Cabinet at the evacuation of Rich mond, one of the pardoned f If Mr. Breckinridge is not pardoned, and if he wishes to be, we hope that he will be. No charge so far as we can learn, lies against him that does not lie equally against all who were in the rebellion. No one has ever accu sed him of inhumanity to prisoners or of anything inconsistent with tbe most knightly courtesy and chivalry. To pardou such offenders as our Government has pardoned and yet to keep Mr. Breckinridge in exile, if he is willing to come under the prescribed obligations', is an unresonable and un just discrimination, in our opinion. We do not know what Mr. B. will or will not swear or promise, but we would lay our life that he will do whatever he says be will do. And none can doubt that, as a loyal citizen, he would be a portion of the intellec tual wealth of Kentucky and of the nation.— Louisville Journal. A R emarkable T ree .—The Paris correspondent of the New York Methodist furnishes the following in teresting account of of a species of tree brought within a few years from Aus tralia to Algiers : The Moniteur in giving an account of the Emperor's recent visit to the Jardin d'Acclimation at Algiers, sta ted that his Majesty was much struck with the rapid growth of the Eucaly ptus Resinfera, or Austrian gum tree, which has attained a height of 30 foet and a diameter of 6 inches in two years. This remarkable tree in its native soil-Australia-sometimea reach es the b#ighi of S40 feet, And has been found more than 19 feet in di ameter at about a yard from the ground. It often yields plank 200 feet long without a single defect. The wood notwithstanding its rapid growth, is hard and heavier than oak. It also presents beautiful colors, and is conse quently well adapted for cabinet work. An astringent gum, known in com merce as "kino," is obtained by ma king incisions into tbe bark. The eucalyptus is an evergreen ; Its leaves have nearly the same shape as laurel. The developement of its lateral bran ches are no less wonderful than its stems. They are small until the trunk attains the height of about 100 feet, when they shoot out almost hor izontally, sometimes to the length of 90 feet, giving the tree the appearance of an enormous umbrella. The seed, strange to say, is very small, and not uulike that of the tobacco plant ; the llowers are white, of a most agreeable smell, and much liked by bees, which extract from them a most delicious honey. fy"A Traveler" wishes us to explain what sense there is, just now, in the term "railroad securities," see ing that there is no security on any of the railroads. We can't do it. t&~ Dispatchei state that Bullock is elected Governor of Massachusetts, and Banks a member of Congress. — —r ' J,. - "' ?
