THE SPICE ISLANDS.
BY FftXD. S. C0ZZEN8.

"The Isles of Temate and Tidore,
Wbene« merchaota bring thair spicy drue«.'
[Paradise Loti.
Once, in a day-dream, on (ha deep,
Methought the Indian iflea I «aw !
All In a sultry, tropic »leap,
Lay Temate and Tidore.
And farther through the glittering hate,
Amboyna's fringe of orient balm,
Gray Motor's wonderoua splay JMtz»,
And Bachia's tuft« of palm,
Deep In the deep each roek and tree
Was lmnged! through the sapphire clear
The cloud'Tault doubled In theaea
I j; Its hollow hemisphere.
Bat o'er the tide, as near we drew,
No touch of fragance filled the air, |
No odor-laden breezes blew
A shore-ward welcome there.
Till up a sadden tempeit sprung,
That shook the i»la»d«' cloistered bloom ;
from hidden sweets of spices wrung
Their secret« of perfuna#.
Loud rose the storm, fierce raged the deep,
The tempest broke in c'ondsof flowers,
The «un drifts in yon Barehia's steep
And Motor'« roey bower«.
A nd. erery air such rupture brings
That breath by breath the pulses thrill
As thrill the wind-harp's hidaea strings
When all the woods are «Uli.
Like to thoa - Isles lome natures clear
In quiet, voiceless peace repose.
Till to some storm soul hovering near
Their hidden sweets unclose.
TRUST.
It's wiser feeing good than bad ;
It's «afer beingmeek than fierce;
It's fitter being sane than mad.
My own hope is, the sun will pierce
The thickest cloud earth ever stretched ;
That after last. returns the first,
ïh'iiniïi a wide compass round be fetched ;
That what began best, can't end worst;
Nor what God blessed onoe, prove accurst I
A N ew R eligious M ovement,—
A singular religions movement has
begun in England. It is proposed
ts unite the members of the English,
Roman Catholic and Greek churches
in friendly communion, and the pub
lic journals report that three hundred
'churches in England have assented
to the measure. From a statement
made by Rev. P. G. Hall, Oxford,
we gather the following indications
of - the character and purpose of this
movement :
"An institution has been tormed
under the title of 'The Association
for the Promotion of the Unity of
Christendom,' to unite in a bond of
intercessary prayer members both of
the clergy and laity of the Roman
Gathoilic, Gfeek aixl Angelica» com
munions. 'To all,' it is said, 'who,
while they lament the divisions
amongst Cristians, look forward for
thçir heul ii ig mainly to a corporate
reunion of' those three great bodies
wl^iph claim , for themselves the in
heritance of the priesthood and in the
namfiof fatboliç an appeal is made.
They* ate not asked to compromise
any principles which they, rightly
or wrongly, hold dear ; they are
simply asked to unite for the promo
tion of a high and holy end.
The names of members are to be
kept strictly private, and the only
obligation imposed upon those who
join the association is the daily use
of a short form of prayer, to which
is added, in the case of priests the
offering at least once in three months'
of the Holy Sacrifice.
Older than M asonry .—The fol
lowing mentioned, society , ia more
ancient than Masonry, and was un
doubtedly in existence ages before
the Christian era. What is more
astonishing about it is, that notwith
standing such invincible tenacity of
lift», this order has never been popu
lar, and must have had but few zeal
ous- members. Its leading charac
teristics are these :
"There shall be no public or pri
vate meetings of the society on any
appointed days, to manage its con
cerns, or W hear lectures delivered
before it ; but it shall be the duty of
every member to meet himself alone
every day and listen to the lectures
ot his owu conscience."
Tt is called the "Self-Examination
Society.." • - r ;:
If people would generally join the
order, the world would be reformed
in one generation.
We have often read pathetic
speeches of Indian warriors, but have
seen nothing more touching than the
following, by a Comanche chief, at
the recent council at Fort Smith, ad
dressed to Col. Sells : "Brother, my
shirt, you see, is in rags. When I
return to my tribe, and say to them,
'T have been among friends,'they
wilj, not believe me. if I return with
this ragged shirt. My wife and
daughter will ask, 'Where is the
calico your friends gave you]'
