F ishing by K i.ectbic L iqut .—The Courier dr Brctangne, a paper pub lished at Lorient, gives an interesting account of an experiment made at Belle Isle lately, to fish at night by means of an electric light. The light was produced by a powerful electro-magnet machine, constructed bv M Bazin, the well known engineer. The experiment, which was conducted by M. BuKin, on board the Andalouse, in presence of 1500 persons assembled on the pier, was completely successful, and the quantity of fish taken very large. A person who was present states that nothing can be more exci ting than fishing at sea by night with the aid of this light. As soon as the submarine lantern was im mersed, shoals of fish of every de scription came to sport in the illumin ated circle, while the fishermen out side of it spread their nets from their boats. The light illuminating the deep sea, the fish arriving in shoals, attracted by the fictitious sun, the boats at the edge of the lighted circle, the deep silence, interrupted only , by the grating of the electro-magnet ma chine, is described as an imposing sight. M. Bazin is shortly to proceed to Bona, in Algeria, to establish a coral fiishery by the assistance of his electric light. He proposes, in (he meantime, to descend full 400 'fjeet into the sea, and explore what he calls the "depths of the ocean" with his subma rine instruments. The Minister of Marine has given orders for a ship of war to be placed at his disposal, and Admiral Choppart has appointed a commission, composed of engineers and naval officers, to attend M. Ba zin '& experiments officially. T he E mpress of A ustria .—The wife of Francis Joseph is one of the most beautiful women of Europe ; and famed equally for the kindness of her temper and the charm of her manner. She is tall, slender, graceful, with a very white skin, and, when pretty well, a good deal of color, large, limpid blue epes, and an amazing head ol very licht hair, which she wears in eight massive braids, wound rOflntl and round her head, forming a mag nificent diadem of hair, such as very few women conld match, from their own resources. She speaks all the principal tongues of Europe, and is particularly fond of the English lan guage, which she speaks perfectly, as though it were her native dialect. She is an exoellent musician, paints and draws extremely well, and is one of the boldest and most skilful of horsewomen. R khuildinu oï this T emple.— The .Tews, both in this country and in Europe, have for several years past been making great efforts to raise sub scriptions for the rebuilding of the Temple at Jerusalem, permission to that effect having been given to them by the Turkish Government. There is a sublimity of purpose about the movement which must claim the res pect and sympathy of all Christendom. L-if Gravitation is the command of God, to which the universe yields perpetual obedience.
