G abi «, connected with the busines» firm of those gentlemen, will pleaso accept our thanks for valued fators rendered us. tätT" Public attention is oalled to the advertmoment of Mr. M. F ocssb , Worker in Tin, Copper and Sheet Iron. Mr. Fous«« is one of our most experienced, capable and reliable mechanics, and is in every way worthy the confidence and patronage of our fellow-citixens. |^~Our friend, J ambs M o V at , gives notice to the public, as per advertisement, (which Bee), that he has just received sup plies of various articles indispensable to house builders, such as Lime, Plaster Paris, Oils, Paints, Turpentine, Window Glass and Putty. Besides, a variety of pot ware, such as ovens, skillets, pots, Ac. B ooel'b D bdo S tob *.— This is one of the oldest and most extensive and popular establishments in our city, and possesses unsurpassed facilities for obtaining every possible variety and description of drugs, medicines, toilet articles, etc. Head B oobl's advertisement for a fur ther insight into the nature of his present stock on hand. Our old friend and ex-confrere of the press, S hbppabd , is there to represent the head of the establishment, and our young friend, G kobqk B badjobd , has a plsce "behind the counter" where he is always ready to give attention to the demanda of customers. l-tj~ We have received from the pub lisher a copy of " G odet's Lady't Book for December. Its decorations are all in princely style and in their usual abun dance and variety. "The Christmas Tree," the "five tableaux" pictures and the "double extension fashion plates" are among the attractions. Now is the time to commence making up subscription clubs. By the way, it will be Been that B bal advertises the "Lady's Book" for salo at his literary depot. The Habit* of a Man of Business A sacred regard to the principles of justice forms the basis of every trans action and regulates the contract of the upright man of business. He is strict in keeping his engagements, does nothing carelessly or in a hurry ; employs nobody to do anything that he can do himself ; keeps every thing in its proper place ; leaves nothing un done that ought to be done, and which circumstances permit him to do ; keep his designs and business from the views of others ; is prompt and deci sive with his customers, and does not overtrade with his capital ; prefers short credits to long ones ; and cash to credit at all times, either in buying or selling; and small profits in credit cases with little risk, to the ebance of better gains with more hazard. He is clear and explicit in all his bargains ; leaves nothing of conse quence to memory which he can and ought to commit to writing; keeps copies of all his important letters which he sends away, and has every letter, invoice, etc., belonging to his business, titled, classed and put away ; never suffers his desk to be confused with m«ny papers lying upon it. Is always at the head of business, well kuowing that if he leaves it, it will leave him ; is constantly examining his books, and sees through all his at lairs, as far as care and attention en able him ; balances regularly at sta ted times, and then makes out and transmits all his accounts current to his customers ; avoids as much as pos sible all sorts of money matters and lawsuits where there is the least haz ard ; keeps a memorandum book in which he notes every little particular relative to appointments, addresses and pettyj|cash matters ; is cautious how he becomes security for any per son, and is generous when urged by motives of humanity. Q ueen V ictoria's D ominions.— The Queen of England is now sover eign over one continent, a hundred peninsulas, five hundred promontories, a thousand lakes, two thousand rivers, and ten thousand islands. Her sub jects number over one hundred and fitty millions. By a wave of her hand, she can summon an army.«of five hundred thousand soldiers, and a navy of a thousand ships of war and a hundred thousand sailors. The As syrian empire was not so wealthy as Great Britain ; the Roman empire was not so populous : the Persiau em pire was not so extensive ; the Ara bian empire was not so powerful ; the Cartbagenian empire was not so much dreaded ; the Spanish empire was not so widely diffused. 1-fT Mortified pride often takes the nanio und guise of a broken heart. T he S hip C ongress .—The old frig ate Congress, which was, as the Nor folk Post says, the first victim of the "age of iron," has, as our readers will remember, been recently raised and brought into the Norfolk Dry Dock, after laying at the bottom of Hamp ton Roads for three years and a half. A curious circumstance is that hun dreds of barrels of salt beef which were on board have been found in good preservation, and those who have eaten of the beef declare it as good as any "salt junk." „ Gov. O rr E lected ,—Complete returns of the State election in South Carolina give Hon, Jas. L. Orr a ma jority of 500 over Wade Hampton, for Governor of South Carolina. Prov. Gov. Perry is elected United States Senator for the long term, ending in 1871. NEW ORLEANS MARKETS. FINANCIAL. T hdrsdat M orkiskj , N ov . 16.
