CnANQitt in the C lim at *.—In Maliett's Northern Antiquities—% ftcarce old book he shows that the degrees of cold at this tjme are much less severe than formerly. The Rivers Loire and Rhone, in Gaul, were regularly frozen over every year, so that whole armies, with their carriages and baggage, could march over them. Even the Tiber froze at Rome ; and J uvbnal »ays that it was requisite to break the ioe in winter, in order to come at the water of the river. Many passages in H obaoï sup pose the street* of Rome tobe lull of ice and snow ; and O vid assures us that the Black Sea was frozen annually. The lat ter writer relates several circumstances concerning that climate whioh at piesent agree only with Norway and Sweden. The forests of Thrace and Pannonia were full of bears and wild boars, and the northern part of Spain was little inhabited for the Bame cause. Indeed ail the ancients w ho mention the climate of Gaul, Germany, Pannonia and Th ace, speak of it as al most insupportable, and agree that the ground was covered with snow the great est part of the year, being incapable of producing olive», grapes and roo»t other fruits. Mr. M allkt conceive» that, the forests being cleared away, the face of the country cultivated, and the marshy place» drained, the moist exhalations which gen erate cold must be considerably lessened, and that the rays of the sun must have a freer access to warm the earth. In addition to the general causes which insensibly effect the destruction of forest«, it wm for merly common to set them on fire in order to procure fertile fields. One of the kings of Sweden waB surnamed the "Wood Cutter," for having cleared vast provinces by felling the tree» with whioh they were covered. Immense forests were also thus cleared away in Norway aad Denmark. A similar change in the climate, and for the same causes, observes the St. Louis lieirublican, has been gradually going on in our own country since its settlement by Europeans. The "ojdest inhabitant" of any neighborhood can remember when the winters wore much more severe than they now are. NEW ORLEANS MARKETS. CIN AV?!AL, W sdkmdit M obbibh , Nov. 13. G old —148@U9.
