C aches or the J amaica I nsurrec tion .—A private letter from Jamaica gives additional particular » of the insurrection in that island . The writer states that tbe negroes of the i' arish of St. Thomas in the East had become greatly in arrears with Government taxes , the payment of which was finally peremptorily de - manded by the authorities , and an artaed force to protect the tax collec - tor was ordered thither . In the mean time the negroes ap - pe a led to tbe Courts , the decisions of which were against them . Un the third of these decisions be - ing rendered directing that tbe taxes must be paid , the negroes set fire to tbe Court - house aud began a furious attack on the whites , in which two of the Judges and other persons were killed . This was followed up by other out - rages until every white person and every colored person known to be in sympathy with tbe authorities , were driven out of tbe parish . The Jamaica Standard says : Over 1,000 rebels bave been hanged and shot in tbe parish of St . Thomas , in the P^ast, and it is not unlikely era the court martials close their sittings , over 2,000 will have paid tbe penalty of their lives for tbe vile attempt to ex - terminate tbe white and colored race of the island . JHjfSir Walter Scott was once nrg * e d not to prop the falling credit of an acquaintance , to which ha replied in these noble words : u The man was my friend when friends were few ; and I will be his , now that bis enemies are many ."
