"Tut, Jack, sir! pooh ! sir, it mnBt all come to you some day—»God bles« yon, my boy, and make you a* linppy at my age a» I am now." In silence the souls of these men em brace. But who is that seraph that gathers them beneath her outspread angel wings ï I have seen her at the fireside fluttering like » dove from bosom to bosom. I have seen her link distant hearts, parted by the whole world—she is the geniuB of the Anglo Saxon family—and her name is h omk. -firr*- » »■ > srnsationai, D ispatchkb .—The fab ricated dispatches from the North tyhioh daily come over the telegraph wires have prevented the Southern people from reposing much confidence in what is sent from Washington and N"W York until corroborated either l.y subsequent manage or mail. It whs telegraphed from this city that the Démocratie Slate Convention of Louisiana had refused to endorse the President's views and policy—whilst the Convention had approved the course of the President in the most cordial and emphatic terms. The correspondence between Mr. Benja min and Commander. Wise with re gard to the genuineness of forgery of the papers found upon the body of the ill-fated Palilgr^n, culled forth a letter from a disiintuiished Confeder ate oflieer to a Richmond paper, git ing strong proof of their authenticity ; the pre»« dispatch explicitly declared that Mujor Borrocke, the ofBocr in question, states in his letter that the papers weie forgeries. Then we had the eRcape of Jefferson Davis in the clothes of a n<-gro— h statement as re volting as it was unfounded. Now we bave it disseminated that the Presi dent remaiked be had tried to over whelm the South with pardon and kindness, but from recent events he bad begun to tblnk them incapable of appelating bis magnanimity. Now, what recent events could have induced such an expression from Mr. Johnson ? Is it the hearty good will and UmgratHl'iil approbation which the whole Southern country exhibits for the wise, mild and conciliatory course of his Administration ? Is it the determination everywhere exhibi ted in the South to throw aside sec tional prejudices, and prove their loy ally by their good deeds? Ol all the instruments of human in genuity, the telegraph is the most available for communicating truth and knowledge. Those who control its workings should be the most con. soientious and fastidious in sending dispatches ; nothing should be trans mitted except what was scrupulously reliable, and nil gossiping should be strictly tabooed. As the thing is now conducted, it looks more like an enterprise for »tock jobbing purposes—for it is flatly de clared, in late Northern papers, that the dispatch not long since forwarded to all parts of the country, to the ef fect that sales of wagons, horses and other military appliances had beeu countermanded, was manufactured for the purpose o( affecting the funds, and inducing the people to believe a war was imminent with Mexico. A truce to such fabrications—they will recoil upon their originators, and the temporary benefits they may 8". Curtis when he occupied Helena, in 1862, captured twenty-three hundred bales of cotton belonging to Oeu. Pillow, then of the Confederate service. These were con fiscated. and, as was supposed, turned over to the officers of the United States Treasury. Since Gen Pillow obtained his pardon, however, it has been ascertained that the Government has never received any benefit from this cotton operation, and it is inferred that Gen. Curtis knows something ol the manner of its disposal. Gen Pil low has instituted proceedings against Gen. Curtis for the missing cotton, or its equivalent in curroucy.— St. Louit Republican. tK&~ The trade of Boston is declin ing steadily. The Journal says : "The city of Boston has to-day a population not much under 200,000, and a valuation, real and personal, of $333,449,900. Nine years ago the amount of her commercial transac tion was $73,101.001 ; for the year 1864 was $51,355,470.
