MiLftARY Order Concerning
Föüt.— We find in the New OrfeanB
Tme Delta of the 10th inst., the fol
lowing General Order (No. 65), which
that journal says was issued by Gen.
S herman on the day previous. This
interposition of military authority to
arrest farther depredations upon the
wood and timber belonging to private
individuals has been long and ar
dently hoped for and will be re
ceived with peculiar satisfaction.
The order is of great importance
to the people, as indicating precisely
what are their rights in this respect
and putting them upon their guard
against imposition :
The time has arrived when no
military necessity can exist for any
interference, by the troops of this
District, with the wood and timber
on lands of private individuals. All
fael and building material necessary
for the use of the troops, will be ob
tained hereafter, and under all cir
cumstances, in the usual way, by
requisitions on the Quartermaster's
Department, to be supplied by con
tract or open purchase, as the Chief
Quartermaster of the Department
may direct. The wants of the troops
when on a march will form no ex
caption to this rule. Fuel for the
time being, when not in the vicinity
of public lands, must be obtained by
requisition on the Quartermaster,
who is always authorized, under such
circumstances, to purchase the regu
lation allowance for the time being
with ready money, or in case he has
no funds, with an equivalent in du
plicate vouchers, confirmed by a cer
tificate made and provided for in
such cases.
